Security x-ray machines won't be that precise. You're looking for cracks that the human eye has trouble seeing.

You can send the helmet back to the manufacturer... most of the name companies will do a free inspection after a drop.

Its worth it to them rather than have you risk getting killed because there was no way to check.

And, no they will not automatically say its unsafe, just to get more money out of you.

x-rays are also VERY expensive here.

i rode by 500 to LAX (los angeles airport) today....took the 405...it was ALOT of fun until the traffic started.

anyway, after parking my bike in the parking lot, i walked to the main building....there was a girl out front, i told her what had happened and she said she'd help me out....so we walked over to this GIANT machine and she put the helmet in a box and rolled it in there. i could not see the screen because it was on the other side of the machine and it was "employers only", and since her boss and some other employers were there, i couldn't see it.......but she looked at it and said that it looked ok, no cracks, no nothing. ...but since i'm kind of paranoid, i think she might've made a mistake...."if you want it done right, you gotta do it yourself".....

a big crack may be noticalbe by the human eye if your looking in the right place and know what your looking for. But the small ones wont be. I wouldnt trust my eyes

it's a shoei X11...how am i suppoed to get it to them? mail it? or can i just walk-in to their place?

contact them and ask. I would go to the trouble of having shoei x-ray it since it is a 600 dollar helmet.

Cracks aren't the only problem. A big drop could have the foam energy absorbtion material separate from the outer shell of the helmet, causing a gap in-between. (Meaning the helmet wouldn't absorb as much energy since the foam liner would slam into the outer shell)

Send it back to Shoei ... for the price those people charge they should send you back a loaner helmet in the interim ...

P.S. a few weeks ago I was at the community field watching a local team play calcio. (Footbal / soccer depending on where you live) There were a handful of motorcycle/scooter dudes watching the game from a rooftop. When the game was over, they all dropped their helmets down to the ground and climbed down the side of the building. Then they all promply rode off.

ya, if it was my other $80 HJC, i'd just buy a new one but $600 is just ouch.

Be sure to include a letter with a brief description of the issue with the
helmet, as well as a
daytime phone number and return address. Once we receive the helmet the
inspection will take 1-3
business days, at which time the helmet is returned to you via UPS Ground. The
inspection is free
and we cover the cost of return shipping.
