running out of gas

as many of you know, my bike, ex500, does not have a gas gauge on it....Nor does it have any kind of a light that turns on when you're almost out of gas.......although it has a reserve tank.

now, i've been in a situation where my bike just ran out of gas with me going 60+ on the freeway but i "think" i had the clutch in at that time.

if the bike is in gear but is off, the wheels can't move..right?

so if you're going 60+ and you don't have your hand on the clutch, and you suddenly run out of gas, and your bike turns off, and you're in gear.....are the wheels gonna just stop moving?

i can't even imagine what would happen to the bike

The bike won't suddenly stop, it'll sputter for a bit and start to feel like you aren't giving it enough juice. The engine will bog and you'll feel like you're starting to stall. Your first reaction will be to rev a little harder, this won't work so you'll pull in the clutch, and the engine will die. At that point you just coast over to the side and flip the petcock to reserve. Find the closest gas station and fill up.

down here if you run out of gas on the freeway you actually gain speed when the 18 wheeler behind you knocks your ash into the next county.it dont take a rocket scientist to fill up the tank and write down the milage then go 100 miles and fill up again.

Don't you have a trip odometer? I just set mine to zero everytime i fill up. I've never had any kind of gas guage either and have never run out.

The EX500 has two trip odometers. I use the one on the right (which has no tenths) as a gas gauge; just reset it each time I get gas.

After I got the bike, the first few times out I let it run out of gas in the ON position to see how many miles I could get before I needed reserve (it was something like 160). Now I just try to fill it up at or around 150 miles so I don't need to bother with the petcock.

ya, i've been wanting to do the odometer but everytime i fill her up, i forget to reset it.

.... it's about the same here....almost everyone goes over speed limit on the freeways, but they are doing the right thing since you have to match the speed of the majority....

when i ran out of gas, i want in the far left lane going 60+, by the time i got to the side i was going 10-15.
