Another great suggestion! The "Connie" has been out for years and has quite the cult following. I have recently run across advertisements for brand-new units in your price range, despite the $8500 MSRP.

The V-Strom 650 has the same engine as the SV650 and SV650S but is tuned and geared for more torque. Either one will fit the bill. The reviewers actually liked the 650 a bit better because it handles quicker.
I'm with the Connie idea. They are the best bike for the money. And you get a bike that hasn't changed in what, 20 years? Very reliable and a large supporting community. They are not modern, but they are tested and true. If I'm not mistake it is a 1 liter engine, carburated, inline 4. Shaft drive. Hard bags come standard, but are not very pretty to look at.

"What good fortune for those of us in power that people do not think. " Hitler - think about that one for a minute.
Again, I appreciate all the suggestions. This is a good base to start from. If anyone has any other specific knowledge about any of these bikes, I'm all ears!
Went over to a dealership and sat on a V-Strom and a Concours. Both are very nice bikes. I like the extra fairing on the Concours and the bags that come with it instead of having to drop another grand for the Suzuki bags. However, my long legs would get a bit cramped on the Kawasaki bent up and under in that position. What a shame! I think i'll probably go for the V-Strom. Thanks for all the advice!
