Sportbike in the City..need help?

#1 Unread post by FrankyArseneau »

Hi

Someone told me the other day that running a sportbike in town would ruin my engine..since its designed to run at high RPM. Is that thrue??

Personally i dont think its thrue, its just to make sure.

Thanks

Hey Frankie, it is more about making sure your bike is run in properly than how it is run around later, and if you are really worried then make sure you use your full rev range through the gears.
I spent my therapy money an a K1200S
The therapy worked, I got a GS now
A touch of insanity crept back in the shape of an R1200R

i don't think this is possible for me.

people who had or know others that have the same bike as mine said 1st gear tops of at around 98mph give or take.

personally, i only tried changing at 7K rpm... and im already around 55mph. the most common city speed limit here is 35mph.

so can't use the full rev range before changing gears.

If you only rode the bike in the city and that's it - then it might gum up on ya and have carbon deposits in the motor over an extended period of time.

BUT, as long as you take it out for a good rip on the highway every month or whatever and run it through it's paces, that'll keep things nice and clean.

With the re-emergence of naked bikes, one day soon, real men will be able to bring their motors out of the false shadows of molded plastic and show their motors to the world without fear of ridicule or shame.

Dont worry!

I have to go thrue a nice long big highway for about 20 minute before getting in town where i work

So giving it a good ride is more often then once per month!

The important part is to make sure that if it's a new bike that you run it through a variety of revs and speeds during the first 600miles. Because this is the break in period. If you don't the pistons and seals won't break in properly and you'll be leaking small amount of oil into the combustion chambers. Basically you'll burn oil, which will hurt your bike in the long run.

After the break in, it's not as important, but it doesn't hurt to rev it up once in a while.

It sounds more like someone is trying to talk you out of getting a sport bike for your first bike...
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

hmmm... before 600 miles, i only got around 70mph top speed on my bike on some back roads practicing. most riding i've done is only around 35-50mph sicne im just city riding.

i only got my M1 around the same time i passed the break-in so i wasn't able to take the freeway.

now, i've hit 98mph on the freeway but only for a very brief moment since i didn't wanna push it more than that for now.

1.6 km = 1 mile I believe. So I think that's like, 10,500 miles or so?

Maybe not.

Anyways it should be well past the break-in period. Assuming the person who rode it before you did it correctly, you should be good to go.
Have fun on the open /¦\
