buying used

I would be quite hesitant to buy used. I've just grown tired of inheriting other people's problems.

It can have its advantages and disadvantages. Since you're a new rider, buying used would probably be the way to go. That way you aren't breaking stuff on your $5,000+ bike.
I understand the "inheriting other people's problems" though. So far 3 of the cars I've owned have been like this. But I got lucky on my bike. Bought it for $1,500, and it runs great.

So really it's your call. I would say buy used, bring a friend, and follow what that site that VX posted (http://www.clarity.net/~adam/buying-bike.html)
