New Verus Used Bike
New Verus Used Bike
From evreyone discusions and seugestions I am going to look at the Ninja 250R today. I was wondering what the benfits besides price on buying a used bike verus a new one would be. I like the idea of a warrenty and if a new bike would not cause me a horrnedus amount of trouble i would perfer it, as I geenarly do not like used anything.
Thanks

The real advantage on buying used is that you do not have to suffer the initial depreciation in price, someone else has already lost out on that. If it's a first bike then I would suggest used anyway then if you do drop it, scratch it etc you will not be as bothered. Insurance may be lower as well. As for waranty I would think that most dealers would give some kind on a second hand bike (not sure in the US as I'm in the UK) And if something does go wrong you can get the spanners out and learn yourself (there's no better feeling than fixing you own bike, knowing you just saved money)
Due to financial cut-backs, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off until further notice!

Also consider that the amount a new bike would depreciate by, would quite happily pay for a fairly major repair to a used bike with no warrantee

it's worth mentioning here, 125's and 250's are very much starter bikes, Allowing you to gain confidence and skills at a rapid rate, but after 6 months to a year (around 5000 miles), you'll be starting to think of upgrading.
The other advantage of having a first bike, for the first 5000ish miles, is after this time, you'll have a better idea what sort of seating position you want from your next bike:
Sports - leaned forwards, feet beneath your arse
Standard - upright position (great for beginning on)
Cruiser - Feet forwards
It's worth remembering that whilst supersports for example look awesome, after this time you may be actually looking at the cruiser end, because the way the bikes are tuned is more your style.
If you get a used first bike, you can gain skills, lose little money, and make you first new purchase in a position where you know exactly what you want, because you have built experience up.

I never buy new unless i have no chioce. Warrantee is seldom good for much. If the bike is new, generally nothing goes wrong, so you don't use it. If the bike is used, you pay that much less that you can likely fix whatever needs fixing. You can generally find a used bike with very little milage on it so it will give you great service. Then since you are talking beginners bike here, you will probably get what you paid for the bike or nearly so when you sell it. How can it get any better than that? Now you can look for a larger bike, knowing better what you want, and without having dented the pocketbook in the mean time.

Re: New Verus Used Bike
I bought a ninja 250 for my wife to learn on, it was a 2004 that I bought used in 2004, a new one was $3000,00 plus dealer charges so when it was all through, the dealer wanted around $3800,00, I was able to buy mine from the cycle trader for around $2700.00 and it came with a helmet, armored jacket and tank bag. I think I made the better choice on the used one. It didn't take long for my wife to put a few scratches on it so for that reason also I'm glad I bought used.aldar wrote:From evreyone discusions and seugestions I am going to look at the Ninja 250R today.
