Screw that, just ride in oncoming traffic, it'll heighten your reflexes, and improve your cornering ability.

When your boost bar fills up hit R1 to get ludacris speed. LoL.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

dont forget using the game shark to up your horsepower.
did this once in gran turismo 3, had an option to increase HP 40x. sounded like a turbine engine and couldnt move forward with 36,000hp, funny though
