I want more power.

#1 Unread post by biff »

Just that...I am looking to increse the HP on my 1999 VN1500 classic. I got the bike not all that long ago and had never had a problem. Today I was getting on the freeway in third....opened my throttle and had a good response, but I know this bike has more than what I got. Any sugestions? I know I can use more air intake. K&N mabey, but is that it...?

You were in third...try dropping down to second. You may not be hitting the RPM needed for your bike's true power to hit in.

Find a dyno to find what RPM that is.

Top end isn't always the power end.

Shift up to fourth and get a lower RPM. Some bikes have no HP gain after a lower RPM, some don't gain til a high RPM.

intake, high flow exhaust, rejet/power commander. Basic, cheapest performance mods.

Big bore, cam it, crank it, balance and blue print it. Stroke it. High compression pistons. Lighter fly wheel for top end power, heavier for low end power.

You might want to clean the air filter? Clogged air filter'll destroy the top end on most bikes.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
