From what I read there is not a lot to choose between leather and synthetic materials these days. But I prefer to wear leather because I just don't feel safe in Cordura. It's subjective, but that's the way I feel about it. I wouldn't wear kangaroo leather though, because of what I believe is the very vicious, wholesale slaughter of kangas down under. A hell of a lot of motorcycle leathers use it these days because it so tough.

I'd be veggie if I could, but I don't do too well on the diet. I feel a lot better if I eat some meat. (I also happen to like it and life is very inconvenient if you don't eat it) But from what I observe it's all down to constitution and metabolism. I've got a couple of vegan friends who are tough as nails and fit as hell. But I also know another whole family of vegans who are disintegrating before my eyes from inadequate nutrition. Of course, I also know a lot of very unhealthy meat eaters...

Just to put the record straight, Verm, the wearing of leather is an issue for many mainstream vegetarians, just as much as it is for vegans. In principle, vegetarians don't believe in killing animals. You have to kill a cow to get its skin. Vegans are the same except they don't eat anything that comes from animals either, like milk, cheese, eggs, honey. In practice, a lot of those who call themselves vegetarians or vegans compromise on some of those principles, so some 'vegetarians' wear leather, eat fish, etc.

Like a friend of mine says, I love vegetarian food - it goes down very well with lamb or roast chicken.

This is second hand knowledge, so take it with a grain of salt. But my boss at one of my current jobs was born in Australia, and was telling us about how much trouble they went to raise cows there when they had Kangaroo's all along. Kanga's which have better tasting meat and better hides for leather. So there's a pretty big industry down there dedicated to raising them like we raise cattle up here.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Back on subject. I am not vegitarian. I couldn't do it. Must eat the meat. However I have no problem with people who choose not to eat meat.

What I do have a problem with is the growing reliance on synthetic materials.

Whatever the materials involved are they have to come from somewhere. Sythnthetics are by and large petrolium oil based and our supplies of that are fast running out. Most synthetic materials are non-renewable resources.

Leather is a renewable resource. Which means if we take care of the mechanisms involved they will have resources for our duration on this planet as a species.

That said I don't condone unneeded cruelty to animals and as a Cat owner you won't find me about to eat cat anytime soon. I have the deepest respect for cultures that before being overwhelmed by more advanced cultures harvested what they needed and after slaughtering animals found a use for everything they harvested off of the carcass.

I am going to admit here to being a hypocrite in that my home is probably as full of plastics and synthetics as everyone elses. If I had the commitment that many vegitarians and almost all vegans have then my home would be a plastic free zone and I'd be running a bike powered by bio-diesel.

Inside the next generation or so thats going to have to happen anyway.

I wear leathers because they are very abrasion resistent and durable. I also eat steaks and hamburgers, so I have no problems with using cow hide.

There are times I feel sorry for the way cows are treated prior to slaughter, but I am not against the principle of eating meat. I would support action improving animal living conditions, but I would not support banning meat consumption.

We humans tend to anthropomophize animals, attributing thoughts and emotions onto them that they simply do not have. I do think overall that we should eat less meat and treat the animals better while they are alive, but to abandon eating meat would be unnatural and foolish. Pretty soon you will have some group anthropomorpizing plants, which is already occuring. Where does it end? Do we cage up all animals in nature to prevent them from killing each other? After all, an animal being torn apart and eaten alive by another animal is certainly brutal and vicious and must be stopped! Maybe we can capture all the lions and tigers in the world and train them how to be vegatarians, then release them again.
