first maintainance is normally just an oil and filter change. Dealers charge way too much for it, but if your not comfortable changing your own oil you dont have much choice

i paid $100 for my 1st 600 mile break-in maintenance.

my mechanic checked almost everything except the valves. he did more than what the owner's manual require.

he even fixed my gear shifter which i didn't know i messed up for free, he just remedied it instead of having me buy a new one.

Is this a brand new motorcycle? If so, you're supposed to take it in at 600 miles or thereabouts for service.

That 600 mile service is generally accepted as the one that really should be done by the dealer. They will check over everything to make sure that there are no 'out of the crate' issues that need taken care of. Anything they find they are supposed to fix under warranty.

Of course some dealers don't do as thorough a job as others on this.

If you bought used, then you may need an oil change, depending on when it was last done. Do you have the service manual?

Where is your mechanic? $100 is a lot less than the dealer would charge. They wanted to charge me $45 just to install the spring that connects the brake pedal to the brake light switch.

My 600 mile check, and any regular service (oil, filter, and safety inspections) is around $100 at my dealer. They are not cheap, but I can see from some stories I've heard, not at the extreme end high cost either.

I'm just guessing, but I'm guessing you are seeing the labor rate in that quote. If oil change and inspections is about 1 hour plus parts - around $100 at your dealer too. Just a guess.

Damage isn't a word that can be pluralized.

I'd go to where you got the bike for a shop manual.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
