There ain't nothin' that a lot of $ and a little time in a fab shop can't fix....
I would look at getting the whole arse end off the CBR. Exaust, heat shielding, subframe etc. I think this will save you the most tie and effort in the long run.

Steel is heavier, that's fer sure. But the reason for the asskicking is cause it's a Cardinal Sin to go through the trouble of a mod like that and not use aluminium... or Ti... :wink:

Bruce has it right, look for a complete rear section from a CBR, it's the easiest starting point.

Now I got to go look for a pic of a 599 tore apart. Your subframe is not bolted on? It's welded? Hell, even my old FJ has a removable subframe.....

I have NO idea what I'm doing, you know what they say about assumptions. I've yet to take apart my back end for any reason... but the seat comes off soooo, it should be possible. I'll run down and check ASAP.

Hmmm, I've wandered through recycle a couple of times, so I'll check there when it warms up enough for me to make the ride out.

Okay... so my doesn't seem to even really HAVE a subframe. It's got the monobackbone that runs right up the middle (the seat rests on this). And then there's what's basically a couple of heavy gauge (1/8th inch diameter or so) wires welded across the middle that attaches to the undertray and the undertray attaches to the cowl.

I could probably remove the whole assembly with a wheel grinder and 10 minutes. Then it becomes a matter of figuring out how to mount the CBR subframe, which (from the look of things) is going to need some mount points welded to the original frame.

This is looking/seeming tougher and tougher.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

That's too bad. I knew it had a steel backbone from, but was hoping they just had a normal removable subframe bolted to that. That means you can make it easily switchable back to stock, and it's always nice to have that option.

But it obviously can be done. So now you have to decide if you want it done bad enough to carve up your bike. I would hang tough on that for a year or so, if it was me. Gather parts, visualize a plan and firm your resolve before you do anything drastic. And then do it over the winter, so you don't lose riding time.

That's literally what I decided to do last night. I'm goigng to keep my eyes peeled for a relatively cheap back end. And this winter I'll be taking a motorcycle mechanics course (where we're allowed to work on our own bikes with permission). So I should be able to do it then.

Changing my current subframe to one that'd bolt on, but still work with the regular fender would probably be really really simple. Though I'd be a little concerned about drilling holes in my frame (because I know that frame flex is important to steering), but considering the part of the bike I'd be fiddling with, that seems like it might not be that big an issue.

I'll figure something out. But it would be really nice to be able to do this, because getting aftermarket parts for my bike is damn tough, and a lot of the changes I want to make involve the rear end (which would be easy to get with the number of CBR's around here). And I do like the double seat set up better then the single seat.

So I've looked at it a little more, and it would seem that it might actually be possible to keep the current subframe on, and just attach the one off the CBR around it. There's next to nothing that makes up the current subframe.

Then if I could somehow engineer mounts that'd let me attach the new subframe with bolts I could change back and forth at will (almost). Which would be very cool.
