Beginer bike for a big guy

#1 Unread post by thereal87 »

Ok, I'm not a small guy (6'2" 240 Lbs large build). I want to get a bike, but I have 3 small problems.

First I need a good beginners bike that is big enough for me. :frusty:

Second I only make $7 an hour at 23 hours a week, so I need a cheap bike.

Third I CAN NOT get a loan, so I need to pay cash. So again cheap bike.

What big cheap beginners bike would you guys recommend? I am looking for a bike (new or used) for about $3000 after registering and even that is going to take me 6 months to save for.

That would probably help, I always leave bits of information out. I am looking for a cruiser or standard bike (yes I know they are basically the same thing). I like feet forward more than back, plus I do not trust myself on a sports bike as I WILL end up as a road stain that way. Hell I barley trust myself in my car (99 grand rix GTP).

Lots of cruisers out there that would work well for you.

in the 3000 and under category.

look at an older honda shadow, yamaha virago kawasaki vulcan, or suzuki intruder. Check out the suzuki savage also, older ones can be had for cheap and they are very biginner friendly.

look for cruisers in the 600-800cc range, they wont be intimidating in the power dept but will have enough power to carry you around just fine, you should fit on them ok, cruisers tend to fit big guys pretty well, even the smaller ones.

dont go looking for a Harley, you wont find one under 3000 period.

I would suggest budgeting about 3000 total, spend 2000-2500 on the bike and the rest on your gear. Factor in a few hundred for the MSF course (well worth the money)

I already took the coarse, and I have a jacket (which would make sense to be the most expensive part of the gear, but I may be wrong). I was considering the Honda Shadow but didn't know if it would be too small. I'll look for a Shadow 583 on cycle trader and ebay. (yes I wil test drive before I buy).

Thanks guys!

The 600 shadow may be a little small for you but the 750 shadow is bigger and still well within the realm of a new rider.

Also check out the vulcan 500, 750, and 800. All would work well for a new rider. ditto on the yamaha Virago 535, 650, and 750, and suzuki savage and intruder 800. Harley sportster 883 would work too but you wont find one on your budget

check out craigslist, good place to find used bikes

I just recently rode my friends '79 KX400. He paid 300 bucks for it, and all it needed was a coat of paint, and a carb adjustment. It runs really really smoothly. So, if you can find one of those in good condition, you'd be set :)
