They won't go searching for a used '06. They'll open up a book that tells them what a used '06 will be worth (i.e depreciation from brand new). And write a check.
I can't really comment on your parents experience, as I've never had the kind of insurance contract where the insurance company goes out and buys you a replacement. After looking at my old policies from various companies, they all say that they'll just pay me the market value of the insured item.
I guess it's only a matter of time until we see what Verm's company will do. Should be interesting.
