Do you want teh internet regulated?

#1 Unread post by skoebl »

So evidently someone's trying to put legislation through that will give large companies like comcast and verizon exclusive rights to what content you see on the internet.

I think this is stupid....I mean, if they decide that motorcyclists are dangerous to society, then sites like this go down (or rather, just don't load).....

Edit: here's another link describing what's going on...

The internet just wouldn't be the internet if it were regulated...

So that's a hell no for regulation.
Have fun on the open /¦\

There's more to this site than just the message board.

I know, I was surprised too.

That's just stupid, this isn't "procreating" China, we're not communist, and we don't want censor-"procreating"-ship. I say that's a direct violation of freedom of speech. But on that second link, it says craigslist is one of the people fighting to keep the internet the way it is. That's cool, because craigslist rocks. Unlike "procreating" douches who want to regulate the internet.

This is something that made the rounds about 1 month ago. See this story.
http://www.networkingpipeline.com/blog/ ... att_c.html

What they are basically saying is if a website pays us we will give their traffic a higher priority on our network. Effectively, creating a "tiered internet"

Phone companies are trying to structure the internet like the current phone business. You know the drill where it costs more to make a long distance call as opposed to making a call across town. The internet with use of VOIP make that system obsolete. The phone companies know this and are trying to save themselves & their revenue streams. (that article also mentions at least one ISP is guilty of blocking VOIP on their network tho fails to say which one)

The link you provided seems to ban this practice. Unless I'm missing something the proposed bill sounds good to me. If I'm wrong please enlighten me.

Another greedy scheme by the utility companies to make more money and spit on the consumer.

I hate TV and what its become. If they did the same type of thing to the internet, it would become absolutely worthless.

Qwest is the telco that is blocking VOIP. they lock out the network ports that are used by direct VOIP applications like internet phone sevices and echolink. Server based VOIP apps like teamspeak are unaffected.

I found this out when I called Qwest's technical support when I was trying to get echolink running through my DSL. Never mind the fact that echolink is NOT an internet phone service

Not surprising. I bet they used the money they extorted out of me for a phone service and work that I didnt authorize, and for service at an apartment that I didnt live in at the time after I had cancelled it.

Of course, these days the utility companies can just make up whatever they want on a bill, and you have to pay. $50 here, $200 there, no lawyer will help you fight it and the collection agencies will happily harass you forever for it. I wonder how much of America's 'debt' is just completely bogus.
