Plastic Chrome
Plastic Chrome
How can I clean and protect the plastic chrome on my bike, noticed my air cleaner and my valve covers are all pitted with bugs, cleaning the bugs off noticed holes in the chrome exposing the milk color plastic under it. Looking to sell my bike want it to look its best so I can fool some unsepecting loser into buying it.

an option that you do have is to lightly sand the pieces to get a good surface that paint will stick to and then repaint them to match the bike. Plastic chrome is almost impossible to get looking shiny again, especially once it's gotten pitted. For the valve cover pieces, I would suggest using high temperature bbq paint (available in a couple different colors, not just black)
If you do a good job of painting them, it will actually look pretty good, and you can be honest with any potential buyer. Just tell them straight out that the chrome started to pit so you painted them so they would look better.

Honda Polish and Cleaner works great for cleaning bugs and overall protection of parts. If you want to "fool" someone in thinking the bike looks better than it does, there is a product called Pro-Prep (i forget who makes it) and it gives the illusion of everything being shiny. Works well on faded plastics on ATV's and dirt bikes.

The valve cover itself is not plastic, but it does have plastic accent pieces. As for the air cleaner, the airbox on most bikes is plastic, and the airbox in my car is plastic.King Frog wrote:Plastic Valve covers? Who in the world buys a bike with plastic Valve covers and Air cleaner?
In the photo below, of my old Suzuki, the two semi-shiny discs at the top of the engine are plastic accent pieces bolted to the valve cover.
