Not any more than lugging it around with you in the store/restaraunt etc. Sometimes I will carry it in with me if I know I'm only going to be a couple minutes.

I wouldn't leave a helmet (any gear) unlocked anywhere. It's not theft for money I fear. There are plenty of people who would throw it into the nearest tree/bush/trash can for giggles. Or nab it to play "hit me harder with that baseball bat" with...

I wouldn't lock one by the chin strap for the same reasons... we need a chin strap... someone who wants to enact biker fantasies with his blow-up doll doesn't.

HA!!! I live near Flint , Michigan...the town GM killed. Crime is so bad around town, I lock my helmet in the trunk of my Venture then take the trunk inside with me...

Ok, well for those of us not rich enough for a luggage box, I am hearing alot of "lockign it up." What does that mean? How do you lock up leathers and a helmet with a chain. It seems like the easeist way to get around that is the weakest part of the helmet entirely, the chinstrap.

A helmet isn't much good with a chin strap ripped off it. Wind has a bad habit off pulling the helmet off your head at road speed. If you bike has a helmet hook, they usually lock, you can safely hang it there and not worry too much. Personally, I wouldn't want a helmet I couldn't strap on properly.
Leathers present a different problem. You could alwyas loop a chain through the sleeve and chain it to the bike...a leather jacket, with out sleeve isn't very practicle either...unless of course you have a matching helmet with a missing chin strap

Since I've been living in a town where people steal my multivitamin supplements from my mailbox (Binghamton, NY i hate you).. I don't trust leaving anything out in the open that's worth more than a couple $$. I bring everything I can inside with me. If I were to leave my helmet outside, I would feed the chain through where the visor would go (full face helmet).
