Looks like a good choice to me, although I'm not really into cruisers. AFAIK, it has the same engine as Ninja 500, which is a de-facto starter sport bike.troxelb wrote: Does anyone have any reasons why I should NOT buy a Vulcan 500 LTD?
And yet another soon to be new biker - a couple questions
I dunno the Scorpion EXO 700 is a $200 helmet and have heard great reviews about it.
And yes, it failed a test. But I don't plan on riding my bike in 10 F weather either. I live in Texas, not North Dakota.

I agree here. Shop around and you'll find MUCH better prices! If I went with MSRP I'd have $1300 worth of gear so far, while I've only spent $300 on it. $400 jacket for $51 (that one was an absolute S.T.E.A.L. though. Found on ebay and bid/won in the last 11 seconds. Got a Teknic Violator), $400 helmet for $100 (brand new Vemar VSR), $230 boots for $109 (Alpinestars SMX-3 new), and $80 gloves for $39 (Teknic Lightning Pro gloves).HandsomeRyan wrote:i disagree with the $1000 figure.
you can get:
jacket for $150
gloves for $50
helmet for $200
boots for $100 (you may already own some)
riding pants (optional) $125
all that is only $625 and you can get most of that stuff cheaper than the prices i have listed.
i wouldnt skimp on helmet, and jacket/gloves also very important. but boots are boots are boots- no reason to go buy what valentino wears at the track to ride you cruiser on sunday afternoon. and a lot of people just wear jeans instead of dedicated riding pants. (although your legs will usually take some damage if you have a crash)
good luck and ride safe.
Although it is a very good idea to try stuff on before you buy. Go to a local bike shop and try on helmets, jackets etc. Find one you like/fits and search online and you'll get a better price.

The EXO 700 failed the cold part of the DOT tests. At around 14 degrees and below farenheit it doesn't meet their standards.what are you talking about? What's the deal with the failed test?
Trox, what can I say? Great minds and all that jazz.

I don't think gear should cost that much. I found my leather jacket at kohls for $130, my helmet was $100-ish, boots were $40, and gloves were $20. That's less than $300. Although, I guess I need a new helmet now after my accident.
