Range on a tank of gas
Magna...
My '86 VF700 gets about 42mpg. The fuel light comes on at 80-something miles. Which is kind of disappointing seeing as how I rode the old KZ440 for 4 hours straight once without refueling. Anyone know if the expensive gas gives better range? I just switched to it yesterday, haven't found yet if it's an improvement or a waste of money.

Expensive gas is just gas with a higher octane rating. That means it's harder to combust. Important in vehicles with forced induction and other high performance items, but if your engine doesn't ping or knock on the cheaper, lower octane gas, just use the cheaper stuff. You won't see a performance increase going to the harder to burn gas.

When the low fuel light comes on or you switch to reserve or when the tripometer reads that magical number, whatever it is that is your personal indicator of choice, I have found it is best to go ahead and stop at the next station and get gas, because pushing it to the pump while all your "buddies" are laughing at you really sucks!

Fuel tank
I have a 2004 Honda 599 and get about 250-260km before hitting reserve and I wish the range was longer. When I go on longer rides I like to stop often to get blood circulating through my body.

I go about 225 before I fill up on my YZF600, but Ill know better as this year goes as Ive not ridden it too much so far. I get about 156km on my GS400 '77.
Well now after riding the YZF for a long trip I have a better idea of how far the tank can last. ITs almost 325km, then I get nevous and fill the tank. I looked at the stats and it is suppose to do 52mpg, which works out to around just over 400 km.

approx 150 miles before the fuel light goes on-on my 03 SV650 and on avg I put 3.4 gallons in it which equates out to approx 44 mpg. I think I should be getting better mileage, and would love longer range. I usually fill up as soon as the light goes on, because I would rather fuel up on my way home than on my way to work.
Haven't been on my bike (1999 Triumph Trophy 1200) long enough to know for sure, but so far it's getting 40+ mpg. With something like a 6.6 gallon tank, I run 200 miles at least before reserve.
Range was a definite requirement for buying the bike. I live in Virginia and work in Maryland, 50 miles away. I go to school in Pennsylvania, which is another 10-15 miles north. So I've got a 100-150 mile daily commute and gas is always more expensive the farther north I go. My minimum requirement is a comfortable 200+ mile range which allows me to fill up at home every 2 days. A 250+ mile range would be gravy since it's every 2 days no matter what.
Fuel economy and range were the primary reasons I was going to get a Suzuki 650 Vstrom, but I traded some of that for a bigger, more freeway oriented used bike from a friend at half the price. Made the wife happy. Overall, a great trade.
Oh, and regarding the diesel KLR650, it's not a Kawasaki. It's some other outfit. Forget the name, but Google "diesel KLR650" and it should come up.
