Nothing wrong with a "for now" bike. If you get a decent one you can practise your kneedragging without having to worry toooo much about scratching up the nice plastics.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

V, you couldn't really 'afford' your dream bike. You financed it, took a risk, and lost.

I dont know why so many people have such a distorted view of their finances...things are just more complicated than paying the monthly bills. People are so concerned with how much they pay monthly on a car or whatever, they dont even look at the actual 'cost'. I'm not talking about just insurance costs and gear, etc...I mean interest paid over long-term loans, depreciation costs including wear and tear, down payments (which do nothing but lower your total interest paid), taxes+fees that will never be recooperated, accidents/thefts/insurance are all about risk management.

When you finance a vehicle you take a huge up-front risk. As you pay on the vehicle and as time goes on, your level of risk decreases. People need to look at their upfront risk and ask themselves..."If I am squashed by a semi driving out of the dealer parking lot, can I afford what I just dumped on this vehicle and afford to buy another one?"

Most people dont...they get excited about a new car and they say, "well, I can afford $300 a month to cover the costs of owning this...I can afford it!" Wrong.

Your bike just got stolen, you took a huge financial hit. Your car is totalled, you still have to buy a new one of those. You dont have confidence in your job, and you are 25 years old. No, you can't afford your dream bike. You couldn't afford the dream bike you already bought (hence your current situation). You are barely out of high school and already you want the best stuff...maybe you should work on building your life first.

As others have said, if you want to keep riding, get a cheap bike you can afford.

V, you wont lose your job and fail your classes. Well, you may lose your job (since this is your third strike) but you can get another job. Low-wage jobs at big corporations are handed to college students like candy on halloween. You wont have any problems if you just get some perspective and don't give up. Study hard, work hard, talk to someone about your situation (someone knowledgable, not a internet message board) and fix it, do whats best for you now and what will be best for you to get back on your feet, dont worry about getting another stupid bike unless you plan on getting one you can really afford, and commute with it or something.

I agree. Seek professional counselling. Should be available free through your school.
Financial counselling, and career counselling. If those prove traumatic you may want emotional counselling as well.
Get your perspective right and the other parts of your life should fall into place.

I love my bike, but it IS a luxury. If things get tough then the toys may have to go so I can concentrate on Life.

Right now the two most important things in life are school and work.
I hope they both work out well for you. I was actually getting worried about you when you weren't posting for a week. I was hoping you were putting all your energy into your school and work.
Familiarity breeds contempt.

Read a book or two by Dave Ramsey, he'll help you keep yourself from making a financial mistake and put yourself into further debt (I'm saving for a bike right now and will pay for it all in cash). After reading several of his books I've decided never to get a credit card and the only thing I may get a loan on would be a house, but I also plan to pay for most of it first. Hope things work out for you.

V man it'll get better. You gotta look for the positives. I didn't buy my first "toy" (a bass boat) until I was 43 and didn't get my bike until last October. I could live without either one since my truck is paid off and I have a snot pile of equity in my home but if things get squirrly, I'll sell em. No biggie, I can always buy again another day. Bottom line is it's time to grow up. Get off the "lightbulb" and start making a difference. I don't know what kinda work you do but I'm guessing it's not going well from what people are saying in this thread. That is priority #1 and if you can't afford living in LA, there are 49 other states that'll be a helluva lot cheaper to live in than where you are especially if you are a renter. Facts are facts you can't avoid em.
