Getting bike tomorrow, a couple questions

I am getting my first bike tomorrow! I was going to get something stupid for my first thinking I would be an exception to the rules. But I am using my better judgement and starting out on something slower and small for my first. Its a 2004 Suzuki sv650. I have read on multiple forums they are one of the best starter bikes you can buy. Its a 2004 with 4,500 miles and they want 4,500 for it. Its half faired. Once I practice on it for a year or two maybe ill move up to something faster.

First off does that sound like a decent deal? Also I know a fair bit about mechanics and cars and such but not really bikes. Is there anything in particular I should be looking at specifically on the bike as far as cosmetic/mechanical problems before I buy it?

as far as a deal, i would say its a fair deal. your not gettin a steal of a deal but they are not ripping you off either. Sv650 is a prettty cool bike, if you got any questions about it being your first bike or what not read the 650s are bad/good learner bikes sticky at the top of this forum. Good luck though and let us know what happens

Great bike but I think you can find a better deal. You can buy one brand new for 6k OTD

As for gear im not 100% sure what im getting yet. I am getting the bike from a small dealer and they agreed to throw in a helmet/gloves. I will get the other stuff shortly after. Im having a experienced friend drive it home for me as the dealer is about 40 miles away. Once its home ill start practicing.

Oh and just to clarify, its a sv650-s which are usually a little sportier looking and usually cost a little more.

A Suzuki SV650 is not remotely small or slow. In fact, in my opinion, it's too big and fast for a beginner.

Obviously, you've already made your decision and you are excited about it. That's cool. Just be careful on that thing. Otherwise, you'll end up being this guy:

I agree, there is nothing small or slow about an SV650s. Its got more to give then you know what to do with, and that will probably be true for awhile. Be careful, the throttle can be touchy and it is top heavy.

Thanks for all the tips, yeah I know its not the BEST beginner bike but its not that bad. + im 6'4, 290lbs so im alot to be moved around. I have alot of hours logged riding my aunts Rebel 250 and that thing is cake to drive... I should be fine but I do know it has some power behind it and nothnig to be fooled with. But I have also read many places its a good bike all around and pretty forgiving compared to most.

But back to the other question. What should I look for on the bike mechanically? Anything obvious?
