Tank bags illegal? Where?
I've been using tank bags for years and know people all over the country that use them. Never heard that before.
I would be the old, slow guy. Just let me know where you are going and I'll try to get there before you leave.

Tank bags will scratch up your paint in the long run. That's part of the reason I try to avoid using mine.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Its ok - like I said in the post that if you have never heard of that then you have never been in that place. For instance I know that at some military installations if you make it to the gate with your tank bag they will make you take it off. But it really depends upon the base.

back packs blow on motorcycles. I use a timbuk2 messenger bag. Completely waterproof, holds my laptop for work, plenty of room (i havve the medium one whch is huge, and there is a large available, and since they're meant for bicyclists, they even have reflective strips already on them. they have an extra strap to keep it from moving around like a normal messenger bag, and if you adjust it right, you can actually have the bulk of the wieght of the bag rest on the seat behind you, i you happen to have a lot of stuff in it.

Oh and, its a lot easier to get things in and out of it without taking it off.

I have this one:

I don't have the study right now, but if you dump w/ a backpack, you have a HUGE chance of increased back injury. Just recently some dude in Birmingham (UK, Not Alabama) had his ARM ripped off at the shoulder when his bag got caught on the mirror of a car he was passing.

They make tank bags and tail packs that you can take off the bike and strap on to your back like a backpack - might want to give those a look.

Here's an example
http://www.bagster.com/en/moto/showroomview.php?id=65
I gotta ask, what kind of backpack has stitching that has a greater tensile strength then that of the human shoulder joint? Seems like the stitching would have let go long before his arm CAME OFF. Dislocated MAYbe, but not off.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Army sur[lus has some kick "O Ring" back packs, I got part of a pack from a CAF pack, and had some canvas straps sewn onto it... best pack I have ever owned. Hunting with it ATM< but I think itll hold my lunch box for work rides...
