I bought a 1991 BMW r80 about a year ago.

This winter I rode it alot, but decided I wanted to do some serious touring of europe while I am here. So - I decided to turn this bike into a touring bike. Unfortunately I'm currently self-employed so money's not exactly growing off of trees. I Paid $1k for the bike and budgeted another $1k to fix it up the way I wanted. I actually only spent about $500 on all the mods.

SO, To all who think you can't have a sweet touring bike for under $2k ... here ya go :D
Complete w/

custom front console, (OK so it's a piece of angle aluminum, sue me.)
powerlet accessory outlets for GPS and Cellphone, whatever
Leather Pouch for cellphone and small goodies,
Kisan Charge Guard (Monitors Volts, Amps and Temp)

Black Spray Paint! WOO HOO!
30mm NATO Surplus Ammo Cans
Used 45 Liter Givi Top Box (got this for free, so I guess it's a cheat)
BMW Gaiters
Image

It looks nice w/ the Ammo crates off too, so the stainless crate Holders show - (good for city duty)

Finally, just for the heck of it, I removed the Ignition switch from the console on the front of the bike, and dissected it so that I could wire it up to the mechanical seat lock. It works - and I can still lock the seat!

nice!
i'm in the process of getting my fj tour-ready. Just ordered a mounting system and a power outlet for my gps. I've also got a line on a used givi top box.

I love older bmw's. You've done a great job with it!

Nice pics, but I noticed the dark-beer color of the fluid in your master cylinder

If BMW finds out you let the fluid get that color, they'll come take your bike away :) Better change that stuff...

I just finished the build today and so took pics to show off -

The bike's not road ready yet - You'll also notice that there are no fuel lines on it yet, the fluids need changing (Brake fluid, oil, final drive oil and gearbox oil), and the valves need to be adjusted and the carbies synched. All this stuff's in the garage - but the building was the fun part so I did it first - Now on to the "normal" stuff :(
