I disagree........

Both while driving as well as riding, its always the crotch rockets revving away....
Eh, I see both do it. On rare ocassions, I'll do it. It's fun, it's silly, it's pointless, and rude at times.

As far as all the anti-Harely brand etc/why would you want one/what can it do that your bike cant?

I dunno, the only Harely I've ever liked are the V-Rods though I'm too short to fit comfortably on one. I'm sure if most people could own a dozen bikes, they'd find their way to owning at least one of a sports, cruiser, standard, tourer etc.

brand loyalty/hatred is pretty pointless for the most part and it can become evangelism. and with evangelism there is usually no way to "prove" one thing over another.

In my old highschool, almost everyone rode Yamaha bikes and if you rode anything else you were almost a pariah...which is where i get my distaste for Yamaha, it's not the brand, it's the evangelism, and almost 20 years later i'll buy a Honda in a hearbeat or a Kaw or HD or Suzuki...but i see yamaha and it becomes tough to want to buy one.

I've never had a bad reaction from "Harley guys" about my little 750 Shadow we all do the nod, and say "nice bike" or "how long you been riding" or some other thing.

you get the same thing with:

Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge

This is a result of an advertising shift in the 80s. Some (really smart)guy came up with the idea to sell a brand name as a culture, rather than a product. The goal was to promote an irrational loyalty to the brand, irrespective of what it was.

It was pioneered by Apple in it's famous 1984 Super Bowl ad, where the woman runs out of a group of mindless clones and tosses a hammer at a giant screen with a Big Brother type character. It was a classic Us vs. Them ad. One of the interesting things about it that remains in these types of ads today, was that they never actually showed the product they were supposedly selling. It didn't really matter, because they were selling you an image, not a computer.

This type of advertising is quite prevalent today. Nike, Harley and others have made great use of this type of cultural conditioning. You can see the result of Harleys efforts on any motorcycle forum, and in people who buy Harley branded items, even though the don't even own a motorcycle. They've done remarkably well, and I applaud their marketing savy.

Two other biggies that have latched on to these methods are the two major political parties. It's no accident that people these days seem to be sharply divided along political lines. In the old days, most people identified themselves more as middle of the road, politically speaking. That has been changing perceptably over the last decade. What I find amusing is that there is very little functional difference between the two parties, yet people will come unglued defending their particular brand.

Fedora Core 5, Ford, and a good German beer!

Also, why do I see more Harleys being towed in trailers than on the road? We have one of the largest Harley shops in the Southeast (I presume?). I might drop by and see if they carry Buell and see what I think of them.

From the perspective of somebody with a limited budget, most of the japanese brands offer a better value. However, if money weren't an issue, buying an American product would definetly be a factor in the decision making process.

Yes I'd buy one, a black FXSTS, my Valk just doesn't have that sound and I'm fine with that. My bike will never be for sale, I'll never need another bike ever. I still don't understand why anybody would sell a Valkyrie this is one amazing motorcycle.
I'd also like to have a Suzuki M109R, a GSXR and a dirt bike of about 500cc. Oh and while I'm dreaming a Boss Hoss. I've been designing in my head for years a chopper I'd like to build/have built based around a v-twin engine if money were no object. Now I'd rather have a blown Valk engine in it.

Dodge and Corona no lime.
