The VR1000 engine in which the V-Rod engine is based upon was not big and heavy. The difference between the air-cooled and stressed Sportster motor and the V-Rod motor is night and day....
Highside, I think the VR1000 Superbike race engine is actually a different design (Roush or someone built it) from the (Porsche designed) V-Rod streetbike motor. Not being much of a Harley guy I better go googling...

For Sale: Ninja 600 with parts bike, needs minor work, $30, no title... (GEE THAT DOESNT RING ANY WARNING BELLS DOES IT?)

The VR was around years before the V-Rod. It was designed by Porshe and they used it as a starting point when they created the V-Rod. There might not be much similarity now, but I can recall reading that when the V-Rod first appeared.

Interestingly, I forgot all about this but today when I went to Soup for news I see they've posted a little "The VR1000 is dead" article which covers the design of the VR1000 engine...

http://www.superbikeplanet.com/vr1000_obit.htm

Engine design was started by Mark Miller and then mainly completed by Rousch (Steve Scheibe, who later left to join Harley). No mention of a relationship with Porsche back then, but it's possible that later on Porsche had access to some of the race engine design. The street engine is just as likely designed from a clean slate, which is why you hire someone like Porsche in the first place (and likely thus why the two engines are so different). Likely someone could dig up specs on both engines to see how different they are... Harley could do something from the combined design experience; they likely have the buget but I wonder do they have a large enough market.

There's more competition in the sportbike market every year, and they've already tainted enough customers with a bad reliability reputation. Either way Buell could really use a modern engine to regain some ground...
