It all depends on what you are looking for it to do. I would fo with a 2 stroke if you want something really snappy. The 4 strokes are going to mimick a street bike the best. Plus if you want to go the extra route try a 450 and have some real fun.
The older XR200's are awsome bikes. Not the fastest, or the best, but they can go just about ANYWHERE you can think of. Are you running stock sprocket sizes on it? When the rear get's worn out, may want to consider upping the teeth on the rear by three, the damn bike can just go with it on there, excelent for technical slow speed trails OR quicker acceleration on a fast trail.

And on the note of the 450's for VX... NO, BAD DOGGY. Hell, avoid 125 & 250 cc 2strokers. I like to avoid 2 strokes in general, big fan of the low RPM availability on 4 strokes.

Since you started on a 1000 Verm I think your only option is to go with the KTM 525.

How tall are you and what is your inseam? As a dirt bike rider for thirty years, I think you are looking to sit with your feet flat on the ground like a street bike. That's not going to happen unless you get a little pit bike or a 60cc MX bike. The suspensions on anything bigger require taller bikes. I used to tell people who are thinking about a dirt bike if they can touch the ground with their tip toes they are good to go! After all if you want to be flat footed on a dirt bike, you might as well just walk

I have only ridden my '84 KDX200. I started riding it initially when I was a scrawny little freshman. It's a 2-stroke so it was a bit too much power iniatally, but I can man handle the bike if necessary.

I recommend an enduro bike to try out personally because they're so dang light.

Honda has a 150 out that in the big wheel or small wheel version. Its as good as riding a dirt bike because it is a dirt bike you can hit the jumps and rail the burms on it. If I was a bit shorter I would have bought one, but any dirt bike can be lowered or you can shave the seat foam, depends on how much you are looking for. Also set the sag lowers it as well but very little. As long as the bike is kept in balance it works, thats what the short pros do - RC on a 450 it was lowered

The Honda CRF 150 is a good starter bike, but the 230 (which took the place of the XR 200) is going to give you quite a bit more power. I will say though...the best bike for just being reliable and getting you where you need to go is the older XR 200s.

We live in farming and ranching country and everyone has an XR 200 and they love it!
