Quickest way to get confident on that bike is a track day with instructers. When you know your limitations in a closed controled enviroment, then the real world becomes much easier too.

You're dislike of constant high speed provides further evidence for my theory that humans aren't really speed freaks, but force freaks aka acceleration freaks. That's why high performance cars/bikes are so fun, because we love to hit that 0-60 time of 4 seconds. Most any ol' car can reach 100 MPH these days, but it's getting there that's fun. Think about it, on a commercial airline trip, the best (or at least most thrilling) parts are takeoff and landing - with all the acceleration. But once you're up at 25,000 feet cruising at 500 MPH, it's nothing; you see people working on their laptops or what not.
Anyway, that's just my theory.
