The rants about my old Harley are more then well deserved as many will attest to.

So far you seem to be the only one ranting about them, nobody else has seconded your opinions. Which begs the question, what exactly were all these problems you allude to? Seeing as you have all kinds of time to slag the marque and the people who ride them, how about spending a few minutes posting a list of all the issues you had with yours? I'm interested to know which stock parts were defective and if Harley honoured their warranty or not. You've mentioned in a previous post that it was an '88FXR, so I know we're not dealing with AMF-era machinery here.

That's easy

1. Electrical connector issues. Coil wires.
2. Oil Leaks (Could not stop this)
3. ran rough in cold weather
4. self destruting wheel bearings

I bought the bike used (first mistake) with 12k miles on it (second mistake) so there was no warranty and the dealer repair costs were high.

The Shadow I replaced it with NEVER saw the inside of a service center for problems in 8000 miles. Never left me stranded and considering the miles i put on it was actually MORE economical then the HD.

I rode the FXR maybe 800 miles between repair visits and sold the bike after putting 3000 miles on it. It left me stranded twice with electrical issues and starting issues. People got aggrivated at me for reving it up. I did that to keep it from stalling most of the time in the desert of LAs Vegas where I lived at the time.

I never felt I could get on that bike and go long distances. No confidence.
Even at today's prices for $20,000 I do not see what you are paying for other then the "prestige" of the badge and to wear the T Shirts.

I swore i would never get sucked into the Harley "mystique" again,. The ONLY saving grace was there was a line of takers for a too high a price when I sold it. For that I am forever greatful. But thats no reason to buy again for me. I still lost too much money on that bike considering the miles i put on it.

Today the resale is not as good as it was then even though the bikes are supposedly better. Many of the HDs on Ebay are not even reaching their reserved prices.

Yeah thats what owning a Harley IS all about and thats why you will never see me with fingerless gloves, leather vest, a bandana chugging a pitcher of beer calling ANYONE "bro" or representing "on behalf of a brotherhood". Thats your world not mine. I can buy a bike that out performs a Harley, class for class for far less outlay on all fronts including insurance, theft worries, expensive accessories.

I'm buying a bike for comfort, LO maintinance, RELIABILITY, I dont' care about the badge. I don't want an obnoxiously loud bike. I have grown past the "look at me" stage. ANd I live in Myrtle Beach where I'll stay at home during "Bike Week" while all the posers are crusiing the boulevard in their identical chromed chariots competeing for attention. While vendors salivate at the "brotherhood's" attempts at independence with $300 pieces of chromed pig metal. Yeah thow me in THAT game coach lol. Been there done it b4 mid life crisis made me do it again. I just have to shake my head because most of those bikes will be on the sales block b4 the first snow falls...lol

I do however want the best bang for the buck. I'll be the one riding the mundane cruiser i select with a full face Helmet as well. This is not about being "cool" for me or accepted in some "self glorfied circle" or to "pick up chicks." Its about economics, fun, open air, and close parking lol.

Anyone who uses an avaitar of themselves chugging a pitcher of beer in a cute leather vest is not exactly credible and is most definately seeking to promote their "bad boy" image so common among those who pay far too much for the bike to support said image.

Would I buy a Harley? Nope... now... if someone gave a fuel injected springer softtail I wouldn't give it away.... but I wouldn't buy one. Would I be pissed if a Harley was exactly as reliable as Harleys have always been? No.. that's just stupid. Harleys are Harleys. Maybe they are better now, but the point was never reliability. If reliability matters to you and you bought a Harley, you are an idiot.

The fact that Gummi has an Ural says it all. If he is happy with that he's not looking for the same thing I with my 60,000 mile a year commute am looking for... nor for whatever you think you need...and that doesn't say anything at all except we are all different. At least I hope I'm different than you.

I'd much rather have the Ural than the Springer Softtail ... and I'd much rather be able to enjoy those machines for what they are than "need" a something reliable... but needs must....

Exactly everything I've personally read from him was just as reasonable as all the other experienced riders on this board. Who cares if he's chugging a bear? I like to chug beers to, that has nothing to do with my riding. As long as he isn't chugging that beer, and then going out and hitting the streets, I don't care either way.

He likes his bike, you like yours, deal with it. I'm not a big fan of Harley myself, but I don't care one way or the other if people like them.

And another thing, who cares if he enjoys being part of a "brotherhood"? Personally, one of my favorite parts of riding is passing another biker on the street, and waving to eachother. Just because it simply says "hey, we both ride motorcycles, isn't this great?" And it's not like most Harley riders are some exclusive elitists or something, I've had just as many Harley riders wave to me (on my little honda) as I have had other riders wave to me.

Get over yourself, and quit trying to make yourself feel better by insulting someone else for their preference of motorcycle.

I feel great about myself. I don't need to wave to others or care if they wave to me. I don't need to belong to a "brotherhood" I don't need to impress anyone with a motorcycle at all. I don't need to go 100MPH or pull the wheels........

Good for you, I'm glad you're happy in your loneliness. But that doesn't make the majority of motorcyclists stupid because they enjoy being part of some kind of "brotherhood" or community. And don't act like that's not important to you, because why else would you be posting on this board? Obviously not for advice, or to learn anything. And wasn't talking about all Harley riders (because god knows, all harley riders and nobody else ride drunk), I was saying that from what I've read from Gummiente, leads me to believe it's not stupid enough to drink a pitcher of beer, and then ride home. Now, if he did drink that pitcher, then ride home, then I'll retract that statement. But I'm not going to jump to the conclusion like you.

And don't start with this "economically" BS... my bike can tour 1000+ miles a day, gets 74MPG, is fun to ride, cheap to maintain, will last 100,000 miles and then some, and costs 1/4th of what your bike cost...so you are a loser even when you try to "out economize" everyone else.
