Hell, I would have just offered to ride it to his place... if he'd give me a ride home.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

What a coworker and I did when I bought my bike and loaded it into his truck without a ramp was to find a ditch and back up into it. Then you can ride up into it with relative ease. Just driving around you may come across a nice little depression off the side of the road and just back that pickup into it. Its the cheapest option, but care must be taken.

I've used Imp's method a few times. Anything that slopes can be used. A ditch, a large pile of dirt, whatever's handy. Roll it in, or roll it out (hopefully with someone sitting on it with their hand on the brake).

My local mechanic uses a self built ramp made out of thick plank with a big hook on one end that attaches to his Van and strips rougly every foot ro so that give the bikes wheels something to grip on to...

It was a little harder getting it off at my place but again, I just lifted it off! (and when I say "I just lifted it off" what I really mean is: my dad, brother, myself and a neighbor just lifted it off! It's that easy! lol

Ya..but c'mon Rachel - you're ridin a girl bike! I know there's a joke in here somewhere about how many Newfies does it take to lift a bike.... 8)
