Stick a magnet on it. If it sticks it's steel if it don't it's aluminum. Some people think that you can't weld cast aluminum but you can.rapidblue wrote: What are kickstarts made out of?

I'm willing to bet it is steel, especially from around that time.
Try to find a forum that caters to your type of bike, and ask if any of them have an extra kickstart. I find that the specific bike community forums always have someone who has everything.
