ok, the normal base line honda costs $14,000. The base line civic hybrid costs $22,000. According to AAA the average driver changes cars ever 6 years. Also according to AAA the average driver puts 21,000 miles on their car per year. With an average gas price (around me at least) is $3.00 per gallon. Normal civic gets 25-30mpg while the hybrid gets 30-35. If in those 6 years you put 126,000 miles on a normal civic you will have spend about $14,000 on gas. If you put 126,000 miles on a hybrid civic you will spend about $11,454 on gas. The difference in ammount spent on gas doesnt make up for the extra price of the hyrbid. Not to metion you have to replace the battery in a hyrbrid every so often, which is expensive, so until hybrids are cheaper they not not worth it i think. If you put many more miles on a hyrbid and own it for a long time then it may be worth it, but not likely.

Hybrid battery replacements are a myth, I've read. Also Honda for one warranties their battery for 7 years (and they expect them to last the life of the car).

But no, hybrids are not worth the extra money for the gas savings. Not even close.

Even if the battery replacement for hybrid's is a myth, consumer reports said that hybrids do not save the consumer any money at all. It is mostly because of money spent on repairs, cost of vehicle, and price once sold. If you want to save gas and have the money, buy a hybrid. If you want to save money, buy a normal car.

My 1995 Civic has a 1.6l inline 4 with VTEC and it averages 35 mpg in the city. I though the hybrids averaged much better than that! Rip off!

ok your theory has holes all over it, ill point out the simple ones first. first your assuming that they already had a civic. lets say they had a fox body mustang or a truck or an suv and they were getting about 15mpg now redo your math. also hybrids pull at least 40-50 not 30- 35 so there you need to do more math. and id like to know where you got 21k miles a year no way in hell thats the average. average is about 15k.
get back to me id like to know what you come up with. not trying to start a e-brawl just making a nice debate

I think he's more just comparing buying a civic hybrid vs buying a regular civic. Current car doesn't really have much bearing.

I do side with you on the mileage aspect (both yearly and mpg). My parents little 98 carolla gets close to 40 mpg in the city (of course, my dad drives like an old man ). And I've seen civics get really high as well. So maybe Honda is just lowballing so everyone is like "omgz teh mileage is so high!!1"....Or soemthing along those lines.

if your going from a car with mpg like a mustang or a truck then any small car will have better gas milage. What i meant was to say that that right now if you are buying a new car that the hyrbird isnt worth it. As for your numbers, mine came from AAA and honda, but lets just say that you put 15,000 miles on a hyrbrid every year for 6 years. At an average gas price of $3.00 per gallon you would spend about $6000 in gas. If you put 15k on a 30-35mpg car you would spend about $7500 in gas. With all hyrbids costing more than their normal counterparts im just saying that currently hybrids will not save you enough gas to make up for their expensive price, of course if you own it for a long time then it will.

i see your point if you were going to buy a new car and it was between either of the civics. yes i do believe ppl change cars every 6 if not more (i do it every 2 prolly)
