Is it too much for a beginner? Yeah. I think so. But, a 1000cc GXR-1000 is 160HP and your 1600cc bike is only 72HP. My 650cc bike is about 70HP.

I think beginners should stay at 60HP or below. So, if you want my opinion - yes, you got a bike that might be a LITTLE too powerful for you. But, it's not insanely powerful. Plus, you say you have dirtbike experience. So, you might be okay.

Honestly, the fact that it weighs 630 pounds is going to be your bigger problem. Once that sucker starts to tip over, you ain't gonna be able to stop it from falling. You may be able to handle the power output, but good luck learning to ride it slow. That would be my advice on what to practice. Learn to do some really fancy low-speed handling. If you don't, you're gonna drop that sucker and have a hell of a time trying to pick it back up.

Here. You're gonna need this:

You sound confident and determined - not moronic. I started small, but moved up rather quickly to the Mean Streak. It is a powerful machine - just pay the bike its due respect, and focus on building good technique. The bike is very agile for its size, and the power output is smooth - never twitchy.

Enjoy your venture into road riding - it only gets better from here.

Cheers,
Loonette

I usually stick up for the mature minded guys that buy bigger CC machines, but I got burned badly by the last one so sorry, but you are a moron

Actually there is no reason why you should not have that Meannie, You are 33, sound responsible and if, IF, you commit yourself to the learning curve sensibly, then there is no reason why you should not be going to visit Loonette and Zootech within a very short time.
I spent my therapy money an a K1200S
The therapy worked, I got a GS now
A touch of insanity crept back in the shape of an R1200R

It's the job of the people on the forums to suggest a reasonable bike to start on, because we want to see you out there riding as long as possible. That being said, you'v picked your bike (and from past experience with other riders) you are going to stick with it.

So congrats on the bike, I hope it keeps you happy. I would never buy it, but it's HUGE compared to me haha. Doesn't make it look any less nice. However, do not be this guy:

Last friday I was making my way home from work, and decided I'd like to have some junk food for that night. So I pull off the road and into the parking lot of the local grocery store. The parking lot around here is really complex, pretty messed up in general, and I HATE the city planners for it.

Anyways, I'm on what amounts to a road through the parking lot tooling a long at a little over 10kmh when I notice up ahead there is a bike (it looked like a 2005 or 06 Yamaha Roadstar in full dress) waiting to turn into the intersection in front of me. I figure, well it looks like he's been waiting a while, lets let him in. I slow down even more, and motion for him to pull ahead. He just looks at me. I'm about 30 yards away, so I motion again. He gets the idea and pulls forward.

He walks his bike, left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot, around the corner. I groan inwardly, oh god, he can't turn it. And then pull up behind him. The car in front of him stops, so he stops and puts down both feet. I'm still doing that super slow crawl thing where you don't yet have to put down a foot, and can almost be said to have stopped. He keeps one hand on the clutch turns around and looks over his shoulder and yells something at me that cannot be heard over the engine.

"WHAT?"

"I've been doing this for three days!"

What do you say to that? "Man that's awsome!" And flash a thumbs up.

The car in front of him pulls ahead and he walks his bike up to speed and rides off. I still haven't put down a foot, but I wince inwardly that someone who was teaching himself to ride would do so on such a big bike and then only wear a denim shirt to protect himself.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Exactly! :D Got to maintain *some* standards.

The whole Asking to be called a moron thing just seems weird to me. What pleasure does the guy get from it? Why should we be giving him that pleasure? And what should we get in return?

Pleasure is relative, my friend. As for what you'd get from it - I'll let that be up to the individual. I'm sure the level of willingness is also different.

Besides, insults don't bother me. I'm rather well hung - thanks!

And what the hell does being called a moron have anything to do with sadoism?

Thanks for the input everyone. Esp. Zoo and Loonette. You guys have hands on experience and I appreciate that.

Not sado but submissive...as in being people getting off on being abused and dominated verbally as well as physically. There are guys who really get off on being insulted... gives them a woodie.
