I've wondered this already (for my truck) and the form is the same for both, with limits on it. We get 7, including space/dash for vanity moto plate and 7 plus space/dash for car plate.
I was looking at Maine's site and it's true that the vanity plate finder will allow you to enter 7 characters, but all of the sample plates have only 5 characters : SAMPL instead of SAMPLE on the full size car plates. I think that could imply that the MC plates might be limited to 5 characters and that the plate finder program was not adapted for motorcycles. Why else would they show less characters on the MC plates than on the standard ones?

In wyoming both cars and bikes get 5 characters but the first one is the county number which is fixed, vanity plates are allowed 4 vanity characters. Only plates that can have more than 5 are Amateur Radio callsign plates which allow 6 characters (most AR callsigns are 6 characters)

Motorcycles cant get vanity plates in wyoming.

my friend down in colorado has the vanity plate R1DE on his bike

hmm are we talking motorcycle plates? For cars/trucks/vans etc it is 7 but I believe you are correct with 5 for motorcycles.

I wanted to do vanity plates (for the car too), but the 5 character limit on the motorcycle plate was, well, too limiting. Also, in Ohio (not sure about elsewhere), you have to pay the same full vanity fee every single year. Why?! What exactly do they do with that extra money?! They certainly aren't fixing the roads around here very well. I know it's only like $30 per year, but still, I guess on principal alone I don't participate.

Cheers,
