Keep an eye on eBay for good deals as you see a lot that are almost new. That will save you a lot of dollars.

Stock bikes are boring, so I know what you mean when you want something a little different. Just a new end can will make very little difference performance-wise but it will sound and look a lot better.

I agree, slap a new can on there!! Unfortunately I don't know much about exhaust for that so I'm not much help. I'm just here for moral support.
