Here in BC, if you have all your coverage with ICBC, you can insure for just 6 months if you wish. Or just a day.

However, if you have alternate collision/comprehensive with Beacon you must insure for the whole year.

Given that storage insurance is so darn expensive, the combination of ICBC compulsory and Beacon for the year make it about the same cost as having 6 months insured and 6 months storage.

From what ive heard riders plus seems to be one of the best places to get insurance in ontario provided you have taken the msf course and are over 25, im not over 25 so poo. Quotes ive seen for a ex500 are rediculous im thinkin ex250 would be a much smarter choice for me.

here is a list of bike friendly insurance agents in ontario. Due to the nature of my abstract I'm with jevco for 1057 a year. the rider safety course didn't affect my insurance, same rate with or with out it. next year i'll shop around when 2 of my tickets expire and see what the competition says. http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforum/sh ... hp?t=50883

Welcome Alice,

As for a beginner bike. Set yourself a budget. Then try a few out for size and feel. Before you purchase inquire as to the cost of insurance for each of the bikes. This cost could be a deal maker or breaker. Then once you feel comfortable with the feel and cost, negociate a deal for it.

The link Lisa provided for insurance is a great source to refer to.

Good luck!

You sound like me when I first started, same course but years ago. :) If you are looking for cruising style bike, I was really happy with a Virago 250 - they don't make them new now, but you can find an older model. Very easy to manage - I had never driven before the course, but this bike was wonderful and not too much power as I got used to driving. Eventually drove from Mississauga to Pennsylvania on it. I think a comparable newer model is now called the Vstar by yamaha. Check out local dealers and auto trader.ca for used bikes.

One advantage of living in Windsor - southern most point in Canada :) we get drivable weather from April to Nov most years - depending on how much cold you can stand so need full year coverage.

My agent quoted me $924 from one company but it will go down to $550 after being insured for a year. I rode 12 years ago, but not since so don't have a recent history. Check on that. I'll be switching companies after the first year to get this lower rate, as a second company isn't as picky about history just that I took the course at some point in my life. $800.

1986 Honda Shadow 700 - liability only.
His comment was that the liability is most of the cost as they expect that if you dump at any decent enough speed you will be injured and so need work pay coverage, and rehab $ or even life insurance.

It wasn't like this 12 years ago - I remember paying $250/year.
