As long as nothing punctures the box a bumpy ride in a UPS truck is no problem for a helmet.
Ride it like you think owning it matters.

And we're assuming these helmets are transported in another magical way to the dealership?
no, but i was assuming when a distributer ships something to a retail outlet they package it correctly, but if you purchase from an online retailer it may not be given the same care and attention. it's the same sort of paranoia about buying camera gear or lenses online for me. buyer beware i guess.

There, you've got to worry as much about the camera dealer as anyone else.

I once tried to buy a used Canon 17-35L from a shop... lens was great... everything was great... except that from the time I looked at it until they were trying to ring it up someone dropped it! They tried to sell it to me then have me submit it as a warranty claim against some 3rd party warranty. Needless to say, I do not have a 17-35L. :(

On the other hand I've ordered lots of camera gear from the major New York camera shops (Adorama, B&H, etc) and all of it has been flawless.
Ride it like you think owning it matters.

The best helmet is one that fits you as closely as possible. The minimum specs to look for are DOT rating (and preferably Snell as well).

Personally I am a sucker for the Shoei Helmets too. I love the Duhamel replica. I recommend ordering from http://www.shoeihelmets.com/

good helmet: FITS you properly and DOT approved

great helmet: fits you properly, is DOT approved AND SHNELL rated

avoid (danger, danger will robinson!!!) : any "novelty" beanies/helmets

style, brand, color, designs are all up to the indavidual to decide...thats what makes biking so sool.

I tried on the Shoei and the Arai when all was said and done I bought the AFX. Fit better than the others, solid visor mechanics, dosen't seem heavy on the head, approved, and less $!

And when I went to their site....they sent stickers!

What if a local dealer has a helmet that you love the feel and fit of but they don't have the color you want. Would you order it online in order to get the color(s) you want?

TripleB
I would order the helmet through the bike shop as I have done twice before. You try on the model you like to make sure it fits, look through their catalogue for all the different colour schemes and order the one you want. A few days later you get the helmet you want, supporting your local bike shop as you go and also get inspect the item before you lay down the cash.
It is win-win.
