I thought it was supposed to make contact. I noticed the gap and thought thats what the problem was.

No it shouldn't make contact. It's a magnetic trigger.

I GOT IT FIXED!!!!! I took the cdi apart and it was a circuit board and I found a site that said to resolder all the connectors and I did and it worked!!! It is getting spark on both sides now!!! I am so excited right now!! Now all I have to do is clean the carburaters. Any suggestions?? Thanks for all the replies!!!

Did you take apart the pickup that's attached to the haed or did you open up the ignition box? And did you have to resolder ALL connectors?

I put the pick up back the way it was and yes I soldered all the connections on the back of the cdi circuit. Now its fouling out my plugs and I don't know how to adjust the carburetor. I do have a shop manual but it dosn't say anything about it and I don't see any adjustment screws. The manual said its over rich fuel air mixture. It keeps backfiring. It was running good but wouldn't idle. I had to give it gas to stay running and now I won't start at all cause my plugs are too fouled out. I cleaned them with sandpaper and regapped them and it almost cranked but kept backfiring. The gas it good and clean looking and I put half a pint of seafoam cleaner in the gas. The guy at advance auto said that was the best stuff to use. I'll be riding as soon as I get these carburetors adjusted right.

Most times backfiring is a sign of a lean mixture. Buy a new set of plugs, run it and pull the plugs to see what they look like. If they're black, it's rich; if they're white-ish, it's lean. If they are a nice brown color, it's about perfect. Then you may have to look into other problems. Now if you do have to adjust the mixture, the mixture screws are on the top front of the carbs. There may be some little white-plastic-phillips-head-screw-looking-caps over the mixture screws. Those caps will let you adjust the mixture within a certain margin.
