My first tire change came at 6000mi, and wasn't really needed - I had at least 3k left in those D220s. My reason for change was the fact that the rubber was getting hard and brittle - due to the months of inactivity during the last half of my deployment to Iraq. D220s suck the fat donkey behind in terms of grip as well.

My switch was to a set of Michelin Pilot Powers, and I am quite pleased with them 3400mi later. They look to have at least twice that much remaining in them, and grip is stellar. I've ridden these tires superslap, twisty mountain road - and rain or shine, without any issues at all.

Yet I have two mates that have/are running them, one with a K5 GSX-R1000 that thought he had a slipping clutch because he was taking off from sets of lights and the bike was revving but he was hardly moving. He realised it was the tyre when the back wheel tried to overtake the front. Needless to say he eventually threw the bike down the road when he came out of a corner and lost the back end. Another on a ZX-9 that says they are "alright" but wouldn't get them again. He says they are a little slippery and suck arse in the wet.

I guess it depends on how you ride.

True enough, I know a number of AMA racers who swear by Powers for trackdays and practice - and a number that don't like them. Tire choices are wide, and opinions varied. My next set of tires won't be Powers, even though I love them - gotta try different things, just because I can.

The Batlax BT020's on my bike are pretty good so far. I've heard people go either way on them. My friend Dan has Mich Pilot Powers on his CBR929RR, says they're the best tire he's ever ridden on.

VX, what Batlax's come on the GSX-R?

When it's time for new rubbers, i'll either upgrade to BT56 or some pilot powers, havn't decided yet. And if i have an aftermarket can by then, i can upgrade to a 170 series rear tire. And no, this isn't a "i need more tire for more power" thing. The 160 that's on there now almost touches the stock can as it is.

PS - I just found out these tires are W rated... Heh. 168 mph here i come.
