Not sure this is available in most areas, but this mostly works for those with a clean or almost clean driving record. By choosing impeding traffic, the courts do not impose any points and the fine remains the same. A win win for both since they still receive their money and you receive no points. To find out if it's offered, arrive to court early and talk to the clerk or the officer who pulled you over.
can you explain a bit more?

check your local laws. i got out of a speeding ticket because it is illegal for a cop to use radar at night, which he did. it is also illegal for them to radar you from an overpass. could be different where you live, check your local laws.

Depending on your state's laws....you can also try guilty with an explanation. Some judges will allow this plea and may reduce the charge based on the presentation of your case.

Toes, its pretty much like pleading guilty with an explanation. You can also plead no contest. You have alot of options...its just a speeding ticket. You can always take the online traffic school before you go to court, then show the judge you are taking responsible measures for your actions. Dress nice and be professional. Judges like to communicate with people more who dress for the occasion to see them.

Impeding traffic is just another violation, but without points. Impede means to hold up, block or get in the way. Basically, it's just a method used by the courts to receive their cash yet offer a good driver the chance to maintain a clean record. You may have heard about Misdemeanors or felonies being "reduced" to a lesser charge due to reasons of cooperation by the violator. An impeding violation is the same thing. You cooperate by pleading guilty with remorse, they provide leniency by reducing the charge and saving you points. But as I stated, usually only for those with clean records.

You could also plead guilty and try asking for probation. In many cases, the court may provide a 6 month or a year probation. If you do not receive a moving violation within that probation period, they wipe it clean. If you receive a moving violation within that period, you will have TWO tickets to deal with and more points. BUT again...it'll only work for a driver with a clean record. The courts usually provide the benefit of a doubt with a driver who has a clean record. Obviously, a clean record indicates responsibility. Therefore, they take this into consideration and believe you will be responsible when you drive/ride again. Another BUT....if you are a new driver/rider who just received your license, a clean record means squat. You may still get a break to prove yourself, but they will be very cautious.

If your record is clean, what you should do is arrive to court early and discuss your options with the arresting officer. Let him know you want to maintain a good driving standard and if there is anything you can do to keep the points off your record. Basically put, kiss his "O Ring" and be FRIENDLY. Yes sir, no sir and display respect. It goes a long way.

As for losing the ticket, there shouldn't be a penalty. Many people in life are forgetful and lose things. Just have your license and they will look up the ticket then provide directions to where you need to go. This is when you ask the name of the officer who pulled you over then ask if he is available. If so, ask if you can speak to him/her then take it from there.
