If that's the original, it's an O-ring chain. I get the same kind of chattering on my '93 Nighthawk whenever the chain is getting a bit dry. It's the dry link plates rubbing under the load.

At 18,200 you might be coming close to the end of the chain's useful life, so replacing it might not be a bad idea. I've got about 15K and change on mine and figure it'll go before 20K. It still looks fine, but when I put it on the center stand and spin the back wheel, I'm starting to see a small variation in the tension as the chain goes round. That's a sign that some of the rollers are starting to wear.
