No you don't need your permit to take the MSF.

In GA I actually had my motorcycle license before I had my car one. When we moved down to GA here (my dad is military) we found out that to get your license for a car you had to have your permit for a year and a day. Leave it up to good ol' dad to figure out that that restriction didn't exist AT ALL for a motorcycle license. So I got my bike permit & car permit, took the MSF, got my motorcycle license and a year after getting my car permit, I got my car license.

Talk about backwards eh? :P

Thats really cool. Gives me hope. Yeah, I didn't know you had to have your car permit for a year either. and I got into the class late. I will go take the MSF A.S.A.P!

And thanks again for all the advice. This is one of the best forums I have ever been to!

Don't know what the current laws are, but when I started riding as a teen in Florida you could get a motorcycle/motor scooter license at age 14. There was a horsepower limit on what you could ride at that age; I'm thinking it was either 5 or 8 horsepower. Hence there was a real market for scooters and small motorcycles. The age requirement for a car license was still 16 at that time.

GrandGT wrote:you might have all kinds of requirements for getting it if your under 18. around here once ur 18 u can get your drivers/motorcycle license instantly if you just get a permit then pass the test, but under 18 is 6 months, driving hours etc etc
I think this is right. I think msf is required in california if your under 21. You get your permit and cant have passengers, ride at night, or on the highway for 6 months. Although I could be wrong.

In Ohio you certainly do need the learner's permit to take the MSF course. You really need to check with your own local DMV - they will have exact answers for your questions.
