The reason I'd try to get a little more is that not all crashes that total a bike will result in serious injury. I know several guys who absolutely trashed their bikes, and actually walked away from the accident. Esp in the case if you buy a new bike and/or finance it, you really dont want to be making payments on a bike you dont have anymore because its totalled.

Theft insurance isnt a bad idea either...

To each their own, I just know theres a general consensus on the boards for a more thorough coverage

Here's what I've spent:

$800 Mint condition 1987 Yamaha XV535 w/9000 miles
$50 Regulator/rectifier replacement
$75 Helmet
$125 Leather jacket
$125 Mesh jacket
$25 Leather gloves (with the essential polyester lining)
$40 Kevlar-lined riding jeans
$440 Insurance (1 year, full coverage, non-sportbike, 25 years old)
$275 MSF Basic Rider Course
$25 Motorcycle cover

All said, I've spent about $2000 to get a nice old cruiser, gear, insurance, and training.

That was pretty much the thing i was worried about is how much my insurance would be and i dont really know how insurance in canada compares to how much you guys are paying. I guess im just going to have to do a little bit more reasearch.
Your biggest concern should not be the insurance, it should be the bike. I'm basing this off of a stereotype (which every new rider falls under) but I'd say that you simply are not ready for a ZX-6R. About the only car on the street that is going to out-accelerate it is going to be something made in Italy (and that'd be a close one). Even my 500R does 0-60 in under 4 seconds, faster than pretty much anything non-italian on the road (and most italian cars too). But the RR bikes (like the ZX-6R) is a monster compared to that. One slip of the throttle and you can throw yourself into a wheelie or brake into a stoppie. You need skill to prepare you to handle the bike!

My bike cost me a whopping $1800. Why pay $600 a year to insure it? I talked to a progressive agent and he suggested I go with only liability and go with as little as possible.

Agreed, I couldn't justify paying the cost of my used bike every 4 years in insurance. Liability insurance is also a standard cost among all insurance providers in my state (NC) since it's required, so less shopping around to do as well.

But that depends on your location. If you live in a bad part of town and don't have a garage, theft and vandalism might affect your insurance coverage choices. That's why a used bike is recommended... you're not going to cry (as much) about a $2000 bike vs. a $8000 bike being stolen/destroyed.

that zx6R is a fun bike to ride, but as was mentioned, it's a lot of bike.

cost for "typical' start up in Alberta as i had similar results for my 750 shadow and 250 ninja:

bike 3000-6000 (used bike)
safety gear 1000ish (jacket 300, boots 200, gloves 100, helmet 200, pants 200 lower end)
registration 50
insurance 200 (not full coverage. discount for the safety course and after riding for a year)
gas 16 (to fill a 4 gallon tank roughly)
oilchange 30 (cheaper if you diy)

don't need all the top of the line safety gear off the bat, but if you can afford it, it is recommended.

good luck, read the stickies, have fun

in regards to the insurance talK...

IMO theft insurance sounds like the only really useful thing outside of basic liability. is it really like $600 on an $1800 bike?

hard to say, I know on the enduro semi-full coverage is still around 300/year and I dont live in a hazardous area, and I'm 22 with a perfect record

Welcome to the cheapest, most extensive motorcycle equipment store in the world

Like I said, I got MOST of my stuff off of ebay brand new. The $400 jacket, that was like new and I nabbed it for $51. The $280 boots I just bought...got 'em for $61. The $400 Vemar VSR helmet I found at www.extremesupply.com for $100 w/free shipping. It was a great helmet, only reason I sold it is because it is very hard to find a tinted face shield, other than that it was great (and has recieved great reviews).

Shop around and you can get good stuff CHEAP! If you rush it you'll end up spending alot more than you need to!
