i dunno if they sold them here in the US.
but if you can find one... you might like these 400cc RR bikes. keep in mind, they will be more powerful than a GS500 and ninja500.
CBR400RR
ZXR400

power is not based solely on engine size.
perfect example are cruiser bikes to sportbikes.
a 600cc sportbike still puts out way more power than a 1100cc cruiser.

Yeah makse sense, but would that CBR400RR be a good bike for a REAL beginner? I will most likely take a course that takes 15 to 20 hours to complete. (Depending on the weather) and it takes you threw all the basics and they put you in situations.

when i looked at the specs... they put out just a little more power than the ninja500.
so as far as the power, it's not bad for newbies.
BUT... i assume the throttle response will be more touchy so you need to be more careful than usual.
BUT also, if you don't mind the sporty bikes like the ninja500 and GS500F... then i suggest to go w/ those instead.

I to am starting on a '79 KZ650. The bike is very heavy at 465.2 pounds dry but I don't find it to be to hard to handle or overly large. I'm 5'11 and could flat foot the bike even it were quite a bit taller. So far the bike has been great and I highly recommend the old Japanese bikes.

Yeah my dads GS850, the throttle on that is a bit touch (imo) but could just be me hehe.
i REALLY like the style of that 400cc bike but im pretty sure i dont have the money for that, prolly even if it was used i dont think i would have the money for that.. and if they sold them anywhere near indiana, or if i could find one i would definetly look into a bike like that.
so if its more powerful than a 500 what would you say it would be compared to? a 600? 750? or just a little more powerful than 500.
my dads GS850 is also pretty heavy, once you get to a certain leaning point that bike is extreamly heavy to pick up. i dono if its accurate but it seems like at least a 500lbs bike.

yeah, those GS850 is pretty heavy and powerful.
it has 80hp accgd to this site...
http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/suzuki ... g_1984.php
not ideal for newbies and it's pretty heavy too.
you know... they might not have sold those 400 RR bikes in the US.
anyway... modern 600cc RR bikes have around 110-120 bhp.
those 400 RR bikes have 55-60 bhp.

yeah back when my dad would take me too an empty parking lot and just let me get the feel for sitting there, putting it in 1st gear.. alternating clutch and throttle and just getting a feel for it and then crusing around the parking lot.. im still getting the hole alternating thing down.. and how many rpm's i should release the clutch at.. like 2 grand or 3 grand. but yeah i was coming to a stop one time and my mind went blank and i TOTALLY forgot what i was doing and i ended up in 1st gear and i was doing about 5 mph and i still had my feet on the bike and i panic'd and just fell off the bike, bike would of fallen on me if it wasnt for the crash bars or whatever on the side of the bike.

since the bike is heavy, it should affect its power too. you know, the whole power to weight ratio. so it won't be as bad as RR bikes which are way lighter and way more powerful.
but still, it's great that your dad teaches you. keep working on it on empty parking lots.
you might wanna consider the MSF too.
