Allow people to buy whatever they want.. but the penalties for using it in a highly unsafe manner should be severe.
Get caught doing 130 mph on a Hayabusa? You're done. Lose your license and your bike. Do it again? Jail.
dang! i'd hate to live in jonnythan country.
In jonnythan country, if you willingly put other human beings at great personal risk of death, injury, or financial loss, you will be punished harshly.
If you do stupid stuff to yourself without bothering anyone else, you're welcome to continue doing so.
"This column isn't much of a fan of the tort bar, yet wonders why litigators have not put the Hayabusa and similar overpowered bikes out of business. High-performance street motorcycles are socially irresponsible, and designed without regard for the safety of riders"
My freakin' 2003 Chevy Cavalier, a sorority girl car, can go 100 mph, it just doesn't get there as fast. The point is, if people are going to drive like aholes, whether it be on a bike or in a car, they're going to drive like aholes no matter what. But that fact that this ignorant coulmnist thinks bike manufacturers should be put out of business, is insane. Should we put Porsche or Ferrari out of business? They make super fast cars that could hurt someone too. Jesus, just takes one stupid football player to hurt himself being a squid to get the attention of some columnist who probably hasn't been within 10 feet of a sport bike in his entire life and who before the Rothlisberger incident, never gave thought to the safety/lack thereof of motorcycles. I'm not ready for a 'busa any time soon but, when I am, I'd better be given the option to buy one, not told by 'litigators' that its too fast for me.
Ok, rants over....have fun out there!
2005 Suzuki SV650
Get a yellow one....they're faster
I agree, big time smackdown for people that endanger others.
on the flipside, bonuses for having a brain and doing things right.
Good driving record..hey you get another 50% of your income tax back.
Congrats.
Good driving record for the past 30 years? got kids? we'll pick up the tab for a state sponsored college.
For the love of god though, quit protecting me from myself. If i get any more protected I'm going to have to start the day with a foam enema, followed by a gel coating over my entire body to protect me from bumps bruises and overenthusiastic mexican food.
And Then i get to start putting on the protective gear, for my hazardous trip to the kitchen, where i will be allowed 1 glass of lukewarm water, to be sipped slowly.
Give it a break. Fix the blatantly obvious wrongs, and leave the dang people alone!
I didn't read the article, but I think laws like this are popping up because the cops feel powerless when they see a busa go by at 100mph+ and know they have no chance of catching them... Also, around here (NJ) anyway, cops are told that in many situations they aren't allowed to "chase" someone on a bike because when the person is "running" from the police they end up killing themselves and the families sue... I know it's crazy, but that is what's going on.

That's actually a good point.
When a Hayabusa blows by a parked uniform on I-95, what is the uniform supposed to do? There is no way a cop will catch a bike that can go from 95 to 145 in maybe 4 seconds, and it will only make the guy on the bike be more dangerous.
the issue cant be HP or power/weight, as many cars can do 150 mph +, both new and modified.
Problem is, unless you have got the skills and the balls to ride a bike, 18K will get you a gsxr1300 or a zx14r in my country that will do these speeds, but in car world you would need to spend uber amounts of cashola to get any where near that kind of power/weight that you can with a bike.
fookem, i think that the poeple who write dodo about banning hyper/super spot bikes are spinless num nut wankers, who will never know what we all know as the koolest feeling in the world "that is to ride a motorcycle"
