This one time in band camp...

I have only one story to tell. I was 18 and on my first street bike "FJ 1200" and the boys egged me on to do a brake stand. Being very young and stupid I fell for it and held the front brake hard and let the clutch go.
To my suprise the bike took off without me . OMG did they laugh there heads off. After I picked the bike up and swallowed my pride I had to laugh to. Was a bonehead move that was, and have never done anything stupid "on a bike anyway" again.

I carry a disc brake lock(actually just a big padlock) and use it whenever I park my bike in an area that I don't trust. Well I never use it at work because we have security and covered parking and only one entrance. Anyway, I decided one day I would start using it since I do park my bike at work for 8 hours and I figure it is a good deterrent. Well I don't think I have to tell you that I forgot to take the lock off the front disc brake and tried to pull away and freaked out when I did a little skid on the front wheel. At first I thought: "what the heck? do I have a flat?!?!" I realized that I forgot to take the lock off and that is just about the most embarrasing way to bend a brake rotor. $265 (for one!) new OEM from Suzuki, or about $140 aftermarket, but I got lucky and found a pair from an 04 SV650 on ebay with 4100 miles on them for $100.

Gotta love EBay, I got rotors there as well for mine. Saved big $$$$.

pulled footpegs on zl900 eliminator to clean behind them ---got to doing something else forgot pegs were off.always leave it in 1st gear so it wont roll off.cranked it up and went down gravel driveway,both feet on ground.had to get on it pretty good to beat traffic,went to put feet on pegs and shift to 2nd,foot went to pavement.had to ride with feet held in air for 1/2 mile before i could turn around and go back and get pegs.

It was 1981 and I had just bought a new Virago 750. I stopped at the post office to get my mail. As I always did with my other bikes I put it in neutral, kick stand down, and while dismounting with my right leg above the bike I felt the bike role forward. Then I heard the kick stand snap up. It’s extremely difficult to hold a bike up with your leg hiked up in the air like a male dog. As the bike started over I didn’t want my left leg to get trapped under the falling bike so I jumped to my left and landed on my side as the bike landed on its side. The first thought that goes through your mind when you do something stupid like this is “hope nobody saw this”, but there always is. I quickly jumped up and started to pick the bike up before anyone could see me. As I was picking up the bike I heard a voice saying, "need any help”.

Longrider... I got that mental picture of you with your "leg hiked up in the air"
and the bike rolling.
And you're right - there seems to always be a witness, so you can't pretend it didn't happen!

I know this feeling all too well.....
In fact, I did the same thing at a gas station once with a side mouonted radiator......a long way from home......on a Sunday when there were no rad shops open....

Mine is in the safety tips forum, but I'll quickly say...Double check your sidestand after a quick stop in a small parking lot to put your earplugs in...The next left turn may be a tight one! I guess I'm blessed that this is the worst one for me!
