Being in GA I have to deal with those stupid showers from time to time, like today and yesterday. I use a Frogg Togg suit. They run about $40 or so on eBay, you can try a froogle search. It breathes but like stated above, it's not going to breathe as well as something that isn't waterproof but for running around in 90F+ heat, I've been fine and that's with my leather jacket on underneath it and jeans under the rain pants.
Better dry and a little warmer than cold and shivering with wet pants/boxers/socks. I've done that before, not fun.

Not entirely true, but you'll get sticker shock from the ones that do breathe well. Goretex at the very least...
$20 at walmart gets you a waterproof pair of pants that is breathable. I have yet to sweat in them and they keep me warm on those cold nights as well (by keeping most of the wind off my legs lol).

The membranes themselves are fairly inexpensive. The high-end companies make very complicated designs with high quality nylons and polyesters that involve a *lot* of designing and prototyping, and the finished product requires a ton of taping, gluing, testing, etc. That, combined with the super-low volume of these products, is what makes them very expensive.
In the end, a $600 Gore-Tex XCR expedition shell from Marmot or whoever isn't any more breathable or waterproof than a $100 rebranded Entrant HB 2-layer jacket.. but it might be a bit more durable, have a much better cut for ice climbing, etc.

I've melted so many pairs of rain pants on hot pipes when I stop for gas i've lost count!
