Welcome, welcome, welcome! :welcome:

We are always more than happy to welcome a new member. You should not be afraid of being "a part of the club" even though at times you must feel like an outsider. Being a female myself, I know what its like to get strange looks when you tell people you ride. 8)

You are so lucky to be riding in some of the most beautiful roads in the country. I myself am from Powell River and dream of being able to ride out there one day. We live in Calgary now so we don't ever get out there on the bikes.

Andrea :)

PS: We have taken the Sunshine Coast bus a good handful of times ourselves. Do you think we were ever on the same bus???
Hey sunshine...given the amount of times I went on the bus to Madeira Park, there is a good chance we were on the same bus once.....

As for the strange looks....so far it's been a fairly positive experience with the exception of the motor vehicle examiner and a few bike stores. Mostly the looks are of surprise. Oh yeah, and my mother....but, then I don't know of many Mom's who approve of motorcycles...

You'll just have to plan a week vacation and ride from Calgary to the Sunshine Coast. That would be an awesome ride.

Maybe we'll be on the same ferry one day. :)

CentralOzzy, now that you mention it, I believe we did go to the mighty McDonnell Ranges. Is that where King's Canyon is? We were there on a bus trip and we got to climb down into the canyon and then climb back up to the top to some very interesting rock formations. I got some good photos of them.
While in Alice Springs we also saw the site of the annual boat race....in the dry river bed....
Oh, and did I mention flies....lots of flies..... :P

Hope your recovery is speedy. For your information my bike is fast, looks fast but really I'm a moderate/intermediate level rider.....guess I'm older and wiser now...allergic to pain...lol. Be happy to join you in a ride sometime at your pace....however Whistler is not really good at present with all the 2010 Olympic construction I would much rather wait until it's all over. We could take some nice roads throughout Mission and the Fraser Valley...you would be pleasantly surprised on the vast number of nice roads available.

Cheers

Before I address your question etc. I'd like to say Sorry for the long rave & that I'm not paying out on you or trying to insult you in any way, I'm only going to talk about this in the hope to educate anyone who reads it.
I choose to 'Ride Motorcycles' here for a reason, Passion! & also because it's Bloody Awesome country to ride in & see (Or Drive for that matter) & it's very dissapointing for me as a tour guide, to know 97% of visitors to my Town are not really seeing the REAL Alice Springs.
blues2cruise wrote:CentralOzzy, now that you mention it, I believe we did go to the mighty McDonnell Ranges. Is that where King's Canyon is?

NO! not even close. Kings Canyon is nice but hugely overrated, it's just a tourist trap on the way to Ayers Rock which is the ULTIMATE tourist trap. The Rock & the Canyon are perfect for this type of thing because they are both isolated formations in the middle of nowhere, which make them perfect for captivating the visitors.
What I mean is, you go there & that's it! Nothing much else around, except Ayers Rock which has the Olgas formation, but that's still in the same area.
So you go there with 'perhaps' a little too much time, when you could be spending more of it at other wonderful, less marketed places as well such as the Macdonnell Ranges. Central Australian Tourism is actually designed this way to maximize you spending your money in the places selected by the powers that be.
It's not about 'YOU' having the best time, it's about where 'They' want your dollars to be!

What if I told you that the Mac's (MacDonnell Ranges) ARE IN ALICE SPRINGS? would you know it? NO. Most people who visit the Alice have no clue that they are standing in the middle of the Oldest Mountains in the WORLD! Pretty significant place to be in the middle of & not visit eh? Kings Canyon is a 3 hour plus drive South from Alice Springs.

For the Locals of Alice....I'd say that most of them have never been to that event. It took me over a decade to go there myself & I only went there because my cousin wanted to check it out.
Anyway it's an Annual event & if your here at that time, sure all aboard for the fun but if not get out of the town & see the beauty that awaits.

In the early days of my Motorcycle business (1992) people came to Central Oz for an average of 7 to 10 days. This way they allowed themselves enough time to see & experience most things worth seeing & left here happy. If people come here with 3 days to spare it's a huge waste of time & money. Better off waiting until you have the time to invest....then you can leave happy as well.

Isn't it ridiculous that people from all over the world travel all this way to get to OZ, then travel all the way to Central OZ to go 3 hours to Kings Canyon & 5 hours to Ayers Rock only to miss seeing something that was around them....that is equal if not better than the places they spent hours to go & see?

SO....What would most visitors say if asked, "What did you do in Alice?"

"Nothing" is the most common answer....followed by "I rode a Camel" &/or I did a Balloon flight". Nothing wrong with that, but interestingly, most of my clients who have done all 3....say "The Harley tour into the Ranges was easily the best thing they did" - Viva Le Motorcycling!

I'd be happy to head out Mission way. I've only been out there on a bike a couple of times. Once to Harrison Hot Springs...lingering over coffee and then trying to get back beofre dark. Oops, I was late getting back. (still had the learners at that point)

And then (also had to be back before dark) along Sylvester road. What a nice ride! I went to visit someone who moved out there, so I didn't get all the way to the end. Apparently there is a waterfall.

I'm hoping a couple more weeks and I should be able to get back on the bike and then a bit of riding to build the strength back up. Just in time for some nice summer riding.

Whoa! Ozzy! I'm glad you prefaced your rave saying it was not directed at me.
While you may not think much of the other "tourist" destinations, for some people getting to see Ayers Rock was a dream of a lifetime. When I was a child, my Grandmother gave me a book about Australia. It fueled my desire to go there. I just took a walk down memory lane by getting out my photos. It appears I also was in the McDonnell Range, but after 23 years it's hard to remember the names of all the places I saw.
I was travelling with my 10 year old daughter.....who rode a camel....twice.....When you travel with a child, you also have to do and see things that will interest a child. :)

I took a look at your web page. You have some very good photos.

PM me when your ready to ride. Have a nice route through Langley area and across Albion Ferry to Mission and back. Total ride time between 3-5 hours or less depending on how much you like to do.

Cheers

My days off are Sunday and Monday

I'm sure I didn't write anything which may be misconstrued as insulting to anyone. They are just facts. Anyway, when you were here in Alice it wasn't like that & I'm sure you went to the Mac's, which is great.

Just because I talk about the Rock & the Canyon as they are today doesn't mean I don't enjoy them. One advantage of being a Local is I KNOW how to get in behind all the hype & do just that. I Love Ayers Rock it's Awesome, that's why I do M/C tours there.

It would be. Some names that may ring a Bell could be....Standley Chasm

& Simpsons Gap.

One of my best friends is traveling all over Australasia right now and spent a couple of months in Australia. He absolutely loved his trip to Ayers Rock, even though there was absolutely nothing to see. Personally, I might have gotten bored (unless my traveling mates were conversationalists) but he adored being out there in the middle of nowhere. I guess it's all just personal preference!

Andrea :)

PS: CentralOz, I love those photos!

I don't think you would get bored because exploring the Rock & the Olgas is great, especially if you are riding a Motorcycle! :littlebike4:

But remember that there are also other things to explore other than the Rock & Kings Canyon in Central Australia, especially ON a M/C.

All a traveller has to do is research a little & dig behind the Hype of the usual rhetoric & reap the rewards of not just doing what your told to do.

I'm sure this is the same for other well known destinations around the world.
