As for the guys with the obscenely loud pipes, I still don't get it... I have so many guys at school that can win the sonic drags, yet their bikes run like "crumb" because of the lack of backpressure. And personally I'm not sure loud pipes save lives. Personally when ever I hear a machine gun approaching I tend to look around for it yeah, but by then it's usually right by me and I'm not paying attention to my lane... Might just be me but that doesn't seem safe to me...

I'm with ya Wrider!
I could never understand this bike snob business. I go by the rider not the bike.
As for loud pipes the only time they make a difference is when they're ahead of me and then I can see them anyway. If they are behind me I don't hear them, so what's the point?

Why make it brand specific, because it's NOT just a HD thing. Go to any bike forum for a specific brand and you will find posts from people trying to make their bikes louder. I've seen it first hand on a Suzuki Volusia/Boulevard forum, and two Yamaha V-star forums.

I can find no information that supportst the claim that Honda (or any other manufacturer) was forced to halt production on bikes due to a lawsuit.

Most info I've seen says that Harley tried to say the sound of some bikes was a trademark infringement, but HARLEY dropped the suit after UNSUCCESSFULLY fighting over the issue for a few years.

HD doesn't seem to have much luck with trademark litigation. Last year Harley lost the right to use the "Sportster" trademark in Mexico:

Don't hold your breath on this one, Silly. The post you replied to is from 2005.

Oh "fudge". I didn't look at the year... just the date, and I was all excited because I thought it was posted recently. Guess I should try to be a little more observant.

P.S. It's cute how they automatically change it to "fudge" on here.
