serious problem need serious help please(long)
Sorry to hear about it. I had a similar incident occur in a car thats engine I rebuilt. What had happened was the knocking was from a main bearing that had failed on the crankshaft. This led to great wear on the connecting rod; the rod and crankshaft created space that created the clacking. I hear that motorcycles have less clearance between the piston and valves; higher compression equals sometimes millimeters of clearance. It the crankshaft journal or connecting rod wear too much noise and the extra millimeters the piston travels up; usually ends up smashing into cylinder head. Some heads are desighned to better protect the valves, and its possible to actually slap the piston to the head without damaging the head or valves. I'm not sure about you bike, but if your crankshaft just rests on the machined case without the bearings, you may need to buy a case, crankshaft, connecting rod, piston, and all the head work. Probably best/cheapest to look for a used engine at a cycle recycler. I bought a used engine about 15 years ago for an 86 Honda Interceptor 500 for $600 that had a rod fail and go through one of the cylinders. Yah its pretty bad, but if your going to keep the bike I'd start calling around the country for a used running engine.

I'm always sorry to here about the death of a love one.
Things you might want to take into consideration.
1-The age of the bike! 96 it coming up 10 years old It still has years to go before it's of vintage status.
2-Do you love the bike enough to put as much money into it as you could to pick up a used one up for.
3-These bike where great first bike and where all "well loved" so finding a "Good Used" motor is going to be tricky especially with low or moderate mileage. ($500-$1000)
4-What is the over all condition of the bike?
5-You could probable make $1,500+ parting your bike out.
Now I'm all for a great story of bringing it back from the dead but are you read for this?
Good Luck!!!
And post back!

i really have no choice. i have no money, and no source of income right now, so im left with just tinkering. i would really like to just get a new used engine, i found a seca II engine minus the carbs and tranny for 150$!!! but i have no money
any rich people out there like helping the less fortunit.
the over all condition of the bike...questionable. its in decent-good shape. but for example, there isnt two alike nuts or bolts hold the front fairing. i want to fix her up, and make her all pretty again. she deserves someone that wont give up on her. i really do want to keep it, and it still runs and drives, its just pressure is getting to the crankcase throught that dead cylinder
. i was thinking a cheap fix, just replace whatever is letting the pressure throught and leave the cylinder dead for now..lol
today im going to take the heads off to get an even better visual inside the engine to see the true extent of the damage. im afraid
but just going to dive right in
ill keep updates comin

... i just want to ride and then die
i found the problem. one of the valves snapped off some how, and was beating on the piston for a good while. and was chipping away at it. it also took out the other valve and spark plug, its been a dead cyclinder for a long time now. but it eventually broke through the piston, which is where the pressure to the crank case was coming throu. its about as wide as the piston itself. a gaping hole. so now my question is...
i want to run it as a dead cyclinder, and just run off the other three, and just replace the piston to stop the pressure from pushing oil out everwhere. i want to leave out the valves and spark plug, will this work? i need a cheap fix, and dont need it to last for long as in i am joining the navy in a month or so, hopefully sooner. but any suggestions will help. or advice.

Fix it right or not at all. That's my advice. I think if I were you, I'd go ahead and memorize the lyrics to "Anchors Aweigh" and pack my bags.
Best of luck to you, and thanks in advance for the job you're about to do for your country.

Let me get this straight... it's one down and four up, right?

I'm Navy too and will be stationed in Fallon NV by the time you get out of boot and A school. If you get orders to there, slight chance depending on your rate, I will help you rebuild it, or build a new one for the cost of parts, and a few brews. I have a few bikes apart in my garage as we speak and really just enjoy the mechanics of 'em.

i want to but dont have the money to fix it right. that would involve new cylinder sleeve or machined, new head, pistons, valves, and man my head hurts already.
not to sound selfish, but i am doing my country a favor more for myself. i need it. and i dont want kids in the first four years of my twenties...so this will keep me straight and on track to a sucessful life.....
