I can't argue with your taste, but have you seen some of the scooters these days? Some of the designs they have are awesome. Very sportlike. I look at the 100mpg range of these things and I want one for local errands! Here I am getting 70mpg like a schmuck.

They can be a lot more fun too for around town stuff.

There are so many scooter riders here now that they have become cool.

There are scooter clubs that go out for group rides. And you don't need a special license for a scooter...just a regular driver's license.

I often see people riding 2 up around the city.

Perhaps if you start on a scooter your Mom will get used to the idea of you on 2 wheels. Then in a couple of years you may be able to move onto a real motorcycle.
Insurance for a scooter is dirt cheap compared to a real bike.

You see my mom isnt that bright... to her a motorcycle is a motorcycle...
also the bike i plan on getting... although it has the styling and design as a sportbike, it is actually a 'standard' bike, sort of across between the sitting position of a sportbike and a cruiser (i think... i read it on this random site)
Personally i have never been a fan of the larger "Cruiser" style bikes. I grew up in milwaukee... the home of harley-davidson (i think...) and never liked the leather, chrome, etc mixture.
Sport-bikes are more new-age... more stylish... and more suited to people my age (16)
with my parents, its all when, where, and how you ask them, not quite so much what your asking for.

EDIT: whoa 4 posts endorsing scooters since i clicked the post button...

about the scooter topic... you put up a good fight... and i might consider it if my mom absolutly shoots down the sport bike thing.

Do your parents really need to sign for you to get a license? I can only go by me getting my car license in Alberta while under the age of majority, but I didn't need to.

Personally, I think going behind their backs would be a mistake, all it does is create some hostility, and a HUGE told you so if something should happen.

Remember, your parents want you to grow up to be a responsible adult. Show them that you can be responsible and they'll be far more likely to respect your decision and help you out. Teach them what you learn about bikes as you learn it, show them you take safety seriously and it becomes tougher to say no.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

ya i woulnt go behind their backs with something this big... but it worked with a game boy when i was 10... lol...

and ya you need to have your parents sign for it if your under 18.
in order to get my class D liscense (standard drivers) you first need get your temps.. then you go for a skills test where you get your "probationary" liscense... where you can only drive 1 passenger at a time and cant drive past 11 PM unless going between home, work, and school. You keep that and if you are free of any driving violations for 9 months you get the next stage liscense.. where you can only drive 5 ppl at a time, and you cant drive between midnight and 5 AM (unless going between work, church, and school).
thats wisconsin for you.
you dont get your full liscense until you are 18... and if you have had a violation while under the GDL (graduated drivers liscense)... it increases the probationary period by 9 months regardless of age.

Cool, I didn't know that. You've done your homework on this, do your homework on the rest, and keep at your parents, they'll cave eventually ;) Or you'll move out and they won't have a say anymore ;) 1 Year isn't that long in the grand scheme of things.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

well i only really know that because im currently in it... lol.. i only have my probationary license.. 1 person and no later than 11.

however, im not sure if this is standard in most states or not...
but you can goto to DMV up here and sign up for a 2 week course that will teach you to ride... and immediatly after you complete the course you get a class M (motorcycle) license added to your drivers license... without having to go through getting temps... waiting... practicing... taking a skills test... etc. although i do hear the class is pretty intensive... (like 25% failure/drop rate) but im in high school, ive most likely had worse.
pretty sweet if you ask me.
