When and how to wave?

I always wave, but will nod my head when about to make a stop, or when I'm just starting off from a stop. Always better to nod at slow speeds. Oh yeah, turns as well.

For me, it seams like only the sportbike riders wave. I rarely get a wave back from anyone on a cruiser. I think it depends on what you are riding. People tend to wave to others on the same style of bike.

I am new to the biking scene and love the idea of waving as a friendly gesture, we all share the same passion after all! So I wave to all, and if they don't wave back, they must have their reason. I wave because I enjoy the ride and enjoy seeing others appreciating the same activity...

I love my Ninja! A friend of mine at work rides a Goldwing, as does his wife, and the past couple of weekends they've taken me riding through some of the foothills of the Appalachains in southern Tennessee and north Alabama, and its just loads of fun in the twisties. I'm not comfortable enough with it yet to really lean it over, but I'm to the point where I have no problem keeping up with them =)

When I was out last weekend I got a waive from almost every HD rider to my surprize. All were a wave just below the left grip. Maybe this was because I was on a standard and wearing my 1/2 shell. All the sportbike riders did was drop a gear and take off, wasn't too impressed.

I love motorcycles, and I love riding. Like many of you, what first drew me
to bikes was not just the experience of riding, but the feeling that I'd
become part of a special community-a brotherhood, really. Nothing calms me
more than a long ride down the interstate, waving to the members of my
beloved clan. Except when I pass Harley guys. I hate Harley guys. Hate,
hate, hate. When they pass me on the highway, you know what I do? I don't
wave. With their little tassle handlebars and the studded luggage and the
half-helmets-God, they drive me crazy.

You know who else I hate? BMW guys. Oh, I do hate those guys. I don't wave
at them, either. They think they're so great, sitting all upright, with
their 180-degree German engines. God, I hate them. They're almost as bad as
those old bastards on their touring motorcycles. You know what I call those
bikes? \"Two-wheeled couches!\" Get it? Because they're so big. They drive
around like they've got all day. Appreciate the scenery somewhere else,
Grampa, and while you're at it, I'm not waving to you.

Ducati guys-I don't wave at them either. Why don't they spend a little more
money on their bikes? \"You can have it in any color you want, as long as
it's red.\" Aren't you cool! Like they even know what a desmo-whatever
engine is, anyway. Try finding the battery, you Italian-wannabe racers! I
never, ever wave at those guys.

Suzuki guys aren't much better, which is why I never wave at them, either.
They always have those stupid helmets sitting on top of their stupid heads,
and God forbid they should wear any safety gear. They make me so mad.
Sometimes they'll speed by and look over at me and you know what I do? I
don't wave. I just keep on going. Please, don't get me started on Kawasaki
guys. Ninjas? What are you, twelve years old? Team Green my "O Ring". I never
wave at Kawasaki guys.

I ride a Honda, and I'll only wave at Honda guys, but even then, I'll never
wave at a guy in full leathers. Never, never, never. Yeah, like you're
going to get your knee down on the New York Thruway. Nice crotch, by the
way. Guys in full leathers will never get a wave from me, and by the way,
neither will the guys in two-piece leathers. And I'll tell you who else I'm
not waving at-those guys with the helmets with the loud paintjobs. Four
pounds of paint on a two pound helmet-like I'm going to wave back to that!
I'll also never wave at someone with a mirrored visor. Or helmet stickers.
Or racing gloves. Or hiking boots.

To me, motorcycling is a like a family, a close-knit brotherhood of people
who ride Hondas, wear jeans and a leather jacket (not Vanson) with regular
gloves and a solid-color helmet with a clear visor, no stickers, no racing
gloves and regular boots (not Timberlands). And isn't that what really
makes riding so special?

Basically your wave can be whatever you want it to be (just not the finger). Make it your own personal salute. I find that just off the side of the handlebar is easiest, because moving lower takes too much arm movement and going higher usually results in lift from the wind. Probably differs slightly depending on the bike.

I actually get waves from pretty much everyone. I ride a cruiser but wear semi-crotch-rocket gear, so maybe it doesn't give them enough time to decide what I am.

And if they don't wave back, it's most likely not something personal. I've had times where I'd be paying so much attention to the traffic flowing with me, that I don't see a biker waving until they're almost past.

So wave, nod, smile, it's all good.

I don't know about all of you, but one thing about waving that I was always told was that it is a sign of respect. Bikers waving to other bikers in respect for who they are. I've seen rockets, hogs, and cruisers all wave to eachother and it gives a good impression, but when someone doesn't wave it makes them out to be cocky and to full of themselves to be trouble with waving back. Just what I have always thought about waving.

Icariz83, I honestly hope those aren't YOUR thoughts on waving because if they are then you are quite off the wall. My uncle rides a Harley ultra-glide and is one the coolest and nicest gentlemen you could ever be so lucky to meet. My other uncle and my father ride old Kawasaki's and also have more class than you could ever have (considering those are your thoughts in you post). Before you go out and pass judgement on other people based on what they ride and how they dress, you should look at who they are, think of who they are. They could be the nicest people in the world and you pre-judge which puts you at a spot lower than anyone I've ever known. So the next time you are out, wave to the Harley, the Suzuki, the Kawasaki, the Ducati, and everything else on two wheels (and three ) because 99% of them are just out there enjoying life and are nice people. (I honest to god hope those are not your true thoughts there, and even if they aren't WHY WOULD YOU POST SUCH NONSENSE!? To all of you other sane riders out there, have a great day an I hope every biker you wave at returns a wave, and even though you may not see his or her face, you can bet your lunch money that they'll be smiling.
